How a 96-year-old Neighbour Transformed a Kenyan Woman’s Life in Germany

A Kenyan woman in Germany has praised her elderly neighbour for helping her feel accepted in a new community.

Ann Nafula, who moved to Germany with her family, described her 96‑year‑old neighbour as a “destiny helper” who helped her overcome initial feelings of fear and unfamiliarity. When Nafula first arrived, the neighbour admitted she had never interacted closely with an African person and, influenced by stereotypes, kept her distance.

Nafula continued to offer kindness, greeting the woman regularly and assisting with baking, an activity the neighbour enjoyed. It took nearly two years for the neighbour to respond in kind, gradually opening up and speaking positively about Nafula to others in the neighbourhood.

The change in attitude had a wider impact. Nafula said that other residents began to welcome her, watch over her children, provide academic support, and offer help when needed. She described the neighbour as a grandmother figure. The relationship between the two women grew from initial suspicion to mutual respect.
