Fuel Queues Hit Nairobi, Machakos as Distribution Strain Bites

Fuel distribution in Nairobi and Machakos is under strain, with inspections by the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) finding long queues at several petrol stations amid rising demand.

EPRA reported increased pressure on distribution networks after visiting multiple stations across the two counties. While most outlets continued to dispense fuel, some had temporarily run out as they awaited new deliveries. The regulator said the queues were largely driven by panic buying rather than a shortage at supply depots.

Earlier in the week, petrol station operators in Nairobi warned that their reserves were declining and could only last a few days. This prompted many motorists to fill their tanks in anticipation of possible shortages. Retailers said deliveries had slowed, making it difficult to meet the sudden rise in demand.

The situation has been worsened by congestion at key facilities in Nairobi’s Industrial Area, including the National Oil Nairobi National Terminal and the Kenya Pipeline Company depot. These sites are essential for inland fuel distribution from the Port of Mombasa, and delays there have affected the pace of supply to retail stations.

EPRA said that the issue lies in distribution logistics rather than overall fuel availability. Motorists reported isolated shortages last week, with some stations charging up to KSh200 per litre where fuel was still available. This has increased concern among the public despite assurances from EPRA that national fuel reserves remain sufficient. The regulator urged consumers to avoid panic buying and warned that hoarding by dealers is illegal.
