Revised US Civics Test to Demand Deeper Knowledge from Immigrants

Revised US Civics Test to Demand Deeper Knowledge from Immigrants

The United States will implement a revised civics test for Green Card holders applying for citizenship.

The new test will require applicants to answer up to 20 oral questions from a pool of 128, with a minimum of 12 correct answers needed to pass. The updated format aims to ensure that candidates demonstrate both sufficient English proficiency and a deeper understanding of US history, government, and civic principles.

The exam will end when a candidate either answers 12 questions correctly or fails to answer 9 questions correctly, potentially shortening the process for unprepared applicants. Older applicants, aged 65 or above, who have held permanent residency for at least 20 years, will be subject to a shortened test of 10 questions drawn from a separate set of 20.

This group will also have the option to take the test in their native language. The civics test content may vary over time, with candidates required to name current political officeholders.

Applicants are advised to begin studying early for the 2025 test, as experts anticipate a more challenging exam. It is important to stay informed through official USCIS resources or consult legal professionals to meet the latest requirements.
