These New Rules to the US Diversity Visa Program (Green Card Lottery) Could Disqualify Millions

The US State Department this week announced two changes to the Diversity Visa Program - also known as Green Card Lottery.

In changes announced in a document on the Federal Register, the State Department now explicitly states that individuals who enter the lottery but not provide all the required information will be disqualified from the lottery for that fiscal year. “Current instructions are not clear that failure to provide that information results in mandatory disqualification,” says the State Department. This includes not submitting a photograph or submitting a photograph that does not fit the requirements.

The State Department will also require all petitioners to have a valid non-expired passport at the time of entering the lottery. Previously, a passport was only needed at the green card interview stage for those who won the lottery. The Department says the new rule is meant to curb fraud. The Department says individuals and organizations have been known to submit fraudulent entries on behalf of individuals without their consent. If they won, the individuals would then be asked by the fraudsters to make payments for the release of their entry information.

“Individuals or entities that submit unauthorized entries will often contact unwitting individuals whose identities were used on selected DV Program entries, inform them of the opportunity to apply for a diversity visa, and hold the entry information from the named petitioner in exchange for payment,” says the State Department.
55,000 permanent resident visas become available annually through a lottery system to nationals of countries with low immigration rates to the United States. An estimated 14 million foreigners participate in the lottery each year, which takes place between October and November.

Hi Jane, what are you exactly trying to apply for?. You must become a permanent resident before you become a citizen. Are you applying for a green card/PR through the DV lottery?.

If you already have them then you can apply for the citizenship.

I did play the dv lottery last year October and tried to check my results in May but couldn't get through

If you tried in the first few 2 weeks of may the website was busy, you can tried again or there is an option if you don't have the conformation number you enter the information that they require.

I hve been applyng for agreen card for along tyme now..bt last yr i applied too..when i tried to check..i found that i was not selected...somebody told me to keep on checking..is there any possibilty if i checked first tyme en i didn't qualify.. That if i check nao i can get dat am selected???

The new restrictions will help Africans to focus on developing Africa and investing in their people and institutions and stop becoming desperate to leave their home countries. May also those who are in the diaspora start moving back to their countries. May the real Good regather them.

Exactly, am that African, been trying to secure an employment since 2016 unsuccessfully. Opted for the lotery in 2018 and have since been trying my luck, hope some day will be successful.

It's easy for you to say, since you weren't born in total poverty where families goes days without even water to drink. Do you expect these vulnerable people to have a say in the corrupt system leave alone developing their country?
Don't be jealous. There is enough for everyone's need but not for someone's greed. I'm sure the immigrants wont cause you discomfort in your country, anyway I wish everyone luck.

If someone checks his or her result the first time and find out that he or she has not won. Can the person keep checking until the deadline expires? Is there a possibility that he or she might be selected afterwards?

i tried on three occasions but didn't win, so I lost interest in it as a result. but this time I'm going to try again, perhaps, my luck would shine this time by the Grace of God.

You just have to keep on trying.. it's all about the luck of the draw. Some people try for 10 years - nothing! Others try for 2 years and hey presto - lucky draw! Keep on trying while continuing to go about your normal life.

Dear madam/sir I married in September 10/2019 and I got my passport in Agust 22/2019 and my wife in Agust 9/2019 respectively. During the time that i fill all my history, i fill um married for the passport And my wife too. becuase we didn't know each other at that time. so, either any problem if we fill as married at the entrance of the dv2021?
