Kenyans Transact a Record Sh1.8 Trillion Via Mobile Cash in Three Months

The Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) has revealed that Kenyans transacted a record Sh1.8 trillion through mobile cash platforms between January and March, 2018.

Of the Sh1.8 trillion, Safaricom's Mpesa service accounted for Sh1.48 trillion.

Equitel Money subscribers transacted Sh389 billion at second place, followed by Airtel Money at 1.88 billion. Telcom Kenya’s T-Kash, which is the latest entrant into the mobile cash market, posted 814 million.

CA further revealed that more Kenyans acquired smart phones and home internet connections within the period, resulting to the growth of internet subscriptions by 8.2 percent to stand at a total of 36.1 million subscribers.

Safaricom remained the leading telco, controlling 67 percent of the market share with 29.5 million subscribers.

Airtel is second with 19.7 percent share with 8.7 million customers, having posted a growth of 18.2 percent between January and March, 2018. Telkom Kenya has  3.8 million subscriptions, controlling 9 percent of the market share.
