How Smart Infrastructure is Boosting Business in Murang’a

Murang’a County’s Smart City Programme has turned previously neglected trading centres into thriving commercial hubs, extending business hours and improving safety and mobility.

Launched in May 2023, the initiative has completed over 35 infrastructure projects, including tarmacked roads, paved walkways, modern drainage systems, and street lighting. These upgrades have reduced flooding, improved accessibility, and encouraged investment, enabling towns to support round-the-clock economic activity. Governor Irungu Kang’ata said the programme focused on strengthening grassroots enterprise.

“We recognised that inadequate infrastructure was undermining local livelihoods. Our goal was to restore dignity and opportunity to traders by making public spaces functional and inviting,” he said.

The improvements span towns including Maragua, Kangema, Kenol, Kiriaini, and Murang’a Town. In each location, cabro paving and upgraded drainage have addressed challenges of mud and flooding, particularly during the rainy season. For residents such as taxi driver Lawrence Mwangi, the change is tangible:

“I used to park in town when it rained because my road was impassable. Now I drive straight to my gate.”

Sanitation upgrades have also improved public health and business conditions. Traders like Peter Kariuki recalled when uncollected waste deterred customers. “Garbage used to pile up for weeks. It was a hazard and bad for business,” he said. Cleaner streets have now restored consumer confidence and a safer trading environment.

Transport operators, particularly boda boda riders, have benefited from safer roads. Peter Macharia, a rider, noted that improved surfaces have reduced accidents and made passenger transport more reliable even in poor weather.

Murang’a’s programme received national recognition at the County and Towns Excellence Awards 2025, hosted by the Town and County Planners Association of Kenya in Nairobi. The initiative was also highlighted at the Smart Cities Forum as a model for inclusive rural-urban development.

Local leaders credit devolution for enabling the programme. Township Ward MCA Charles Machigo said the initiative has raised living standards and urged residents to leverage the improved infrastructure to expand businesses.

“We now have the foundation for a 24-hour economy. It’s time for residents to seize the opportunity,” he said.
