US-based Kenyan Physician Hellen Nyar Okinda Remembered for Kindness and Service

Hellen Nyar Okinda, a Kenyan-born physician based in the United States, has died suddenly, prompting tributes from colleagues, friends, and family across several countries.

Hellen, who built a respected medical career after moving to the US, is being remembered for her exceptional kindness, professionalism, and commitment to others. Messages shared online reflect deep sorrow and admiration, describing her as a compassionate caregiver whose empathy extended well beyond her clinical duties.

Among those paying tribute was her close friend, Val Ocharo, from Little Elm, Texas. Ocharo recalled how, at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, Hellen arrived at her home in medical scrubs, bringing protective masks and comfort after Ocharo’s father had died.

“She stayed behind to ensure my children were okay,” Ocharo wrote.

Family members also shared personal memories celebrating her warmth and humour. Her sister, Sally Jones Shiro Min Otis, posted an old photograph and reflected on their shared moments and laughter, describing Hellen as a constant source of joy and support within the family.

Friends and colleagues across Kenya and the United States have spoken of her far-reaching influence. Lorraine Clementina, one of those mourning her loss, described Hellen as a motherly figure who offered love and comfort after her own mother’s death.

“You’ve been there with open arms, love, and comfort,” she wrote, expressing gratitude for Hellen’s compassion and steady presence.

Many who knew her have said Hellen’s life reflected the highest ideals of her profession. Her approach to care combined clinical skill with genuine empathy, earning her the respect and affection of patients and peers alike.

Hellen Nyar Okinda is being remembered as a doctor whose life embodied service, humility and enduring compassion.
