MCAs Push to Honour Pheroze Nowrojee by Renaming City Road

Nairobi County lawmakers have introduced a motion to rename a major city road in honour of the late Senior Counsel Pheroze Nowrojee.

The motion was presented by Nairobi South MCA Waithera Chege, who also serves as Deputy Minority Leader in the County Assembly. She said that the proposal seeks to formally recognise Nowrojee’s lifelong dedication to justice, constitutionalism, and human rights.

Pheroze Nowrojee passed away on 5 April 2025 at the age of 84. Over his six-decade legal career, he became one of Kenya’s most respected legal figures, known for defending civil liberties and representing clients in politically sensitive cases, often on a pro bono basis.

Beyond his legal work, Nowrojee was also a scholar and public intellectual whose contributions influenced legal and democratic discourse in Kenya. Chege noted that the renaming effort is in line with the Nairobi City County Property Addressing and Street Naming Policy of 2021.

The policy outlines a formal process through which roads can be renamed, requiring Assembly approval and executive action within three months of submission. A similar precedent was set in 2021 when Mbagathi Way was renamed in honour of opposition leader Raila Odinga, recognising his role in the country’s democratic development.

If passed, the current motion would place Nowrojee among a small number of national figures whose names are reflected in Nairobi’s public infrastructure.
