Siaya Governor Praises Sifuna as Key ODM Leader Ahead of 2027 Election

Siaya Governor James Orengo has publicly defended ODM Secretary-General Edwin Sifuna, describing him as a vital leader within the party and warning against any attempts to weaken his position.
Orengo, a longtime ally of ODM leader Raila Odinga, praised Sifuna’s political skill and high profile, noting that few other parties have secretaries-general as well known or effective. He called Sifuna a “wonderful individual” whose departure would be a significant loss to ODM.
The governor’s remarks come amid increased scrutiny of ODM’s internal unity and direction ahead of the 2027 general elections. Recent public disagreements involving Sifuna and other senior party members have raised questions about cohesion at the top.
Despite ODM’s cooperation with the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) until 2027, Sifuna has maintained a critical stance on government policies, positioning the party as a key opposition voice. Serving also as Nairobi Senator, Sifuna has often made clear his loyalty to Raila while emphasising that ODM’s participation in government remains limited and largely symbolic.
Orengo also defended ODM’s internal culture against accusations of being a personality-driven party. He highlighted the party’s commitment to democratic principles and encouraged open debate, saying members are urged to “speak truth to power,” even given their close relationship with the government.
