Governors Condemn Senator Methu’s Remarks on President Ruto

Remarks by Nyandarua Senator John Methu about President William Ruto have prompted criticism from several governors, who said his comments were disrespectful to the presidency.

The issue arose during the burial of Josphine Guantai, the mother of Council of Governors (CoG) CEO Mary Mwiti, where leaders publicly addressed the matter. CoG chair and Wajir Governor Ahmed Abdullahi said the presidency symbolises national unity and should be treated with respect.

He urged younger politicians to be measured in their public statements, noting that the country has only one president at a time. Tharaka-Nithi Governor Muthomi Njuki described Methu’s conduct as unacceptable, saying it amounted to lecturing the head of state.

Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru defended Ruto’s position in the Mt Kenya region and said efforts to weaken his support ahead of the 2027 General Election would not succeed. She added that leaders from the region would protect their role in government and maintained that the president retains strong backing there.

Murang’a Governor Irungu Kangata called for restraint and respectful engagement in political debate. He said moderation in public discourse is necessary to support stability and development.
