Detectives Quiz Kenyan Singer Ruth Matete over Husband’s Death as Nigerian Embassy Holds His Body

Kenyan gospel singer Ruth Matete has been interrogated over the recent death of her Nigerian husband, Pastor John Apewajoye.
Matete, who tied the knot with Apewajoye last November, was quizzed by detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) on Thursday, according to Daily Nation.
She told detectives that her husband got burnt while trying to light up a gas cylinder at their home in Athi River on March 30th, 2020.
Apewajoye, who sustained burn injuries, was first rushed Shallom Hospital and later transferred to Bellevue South Hospital’s high dependency unit (HDU), Matete said.
She added that he developed complications and was moved to Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) on April 5th and died while undergoing medication at the facility on April 11th at 8:30 pm.
Matete’s lawyer Robert Odanga told Daily Nation that a post-mortem was yet to be carried out since the Nigerian embassy is still holding Apewajowe’s body at KNH mortuary.
This was after Apewajowe’s manager and friend, Jessy Mcjessiey, a Nigerian, released a video claiming foul play into his sudden death. In the video, Jessy claimed that Matete had previously stabbed her husband on different occasions and had threatened to kill him.
“Ruth was very violent to John. And Ruth, you can look me into the eyes and say if am telling a lie. You have stubbed John not ones, not twice. The first time I came to know about the stubbing issue was during my visit to their Greatwall estate in Athi River. Ruth, you stabbed him. You almost killed him. I was there recording everything,” said Jessy, attaching two audios recordings.
DCI sleuths, forensic officers and Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority officials visited Matete’s house where samples, including the gas cylinder that reportedly exploded, were collected.
Matete, the winner of the 2012 Tusker Project Fame singing competition, is reportedly two months pregnant with her first child.
