Winnie Odinga Expresses Gratitude to Fally Ipupa for Emotional Tribute to Raila

Musicians from across East Africa have released a series of tributes following the death of Kenya’s former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.

Congolese singer Fally Ipupa delivered one of the most prominent homages, performing a song that expressed solidarity with Kenya and the Odinga family. Winnie Odinga, Member of the East African Legislative Assembly and daughter of the late leader, thanked Ipupa publicly, describing his gesture as deeply meaningful during a time of national mourning.

In the tribute, sung partly in Swahili, Ipupa declared, “Kenya, Congo inasimama na wewe” and “Raila Odinga, tuko pamoja na Kenya, Congo inalia na wewe,” symbolising shared grief between the two countries.

Raila Odinga died on 15 October 2025 in India. His burial took place on 19 October in Bondo, Siaya County, following a state funeral and memorial service attended by regional leaders, including President William Ruto, former President Uhuru Kenyatta, and Nigeria’s former President Olusegun Obasanjo.

The ceremonies reflected his status as both a national figure and a respected voice in African politics. East African artists have responded with musical tributes that extend beyond Kenya’s borders.

Tanzanian star Diamond Platnumz released a ten-minute track titled Ulale Salama Raila Odinga, featuring Mbosso, Rayvanny and Zuchu. The song, which quickly attracted a large audience online, commemorates Raila's life and his impact on the region.

Gospel singer Christina Shusho released Pumzika Baba, honouring Odinga’s commitment to justice and democratic reform. R&B artist Juma Jux recalled meeting him in Nairobi, describing him as “humility wrapped in greatness,” a sentiment shared by Ali Kiba, who praised Raila as a “resilient spirit” with a lasting continental legacy.

Ugandan musician Jose Chameleon also paid tribute, calling Raila's death a loss not only for Kenya but for Africa as a whole. His remarks echoed the wider regional response, which reflected Raila's influence across borders and his role in promoting democratic values.
