East Africa Sings for Raila: Artists Unite in Tribute to a Fallen Icon

A wave of musical tributes is emerging across East Africa following the death of veteran opposition leader Raila Odinga, as artists from different genres and generations honour his memory through song.

Raila Odinga, a central figure in Kenya’s political landscape for decades, inspired many through his leadership and advocacy for democratic rights. His death has prompted a strong response from the artistic community, with musicians using their platforms to express collective grief and respect for his legacy.

Bien-Aimé Baraza of Sauti Sol was among the first to speak publicly, describing Raila as a “library of wisdom” and urging Kenyans to uphold his values of truth, peace, and democracy. Bien said Raila’s life reflected endurance and public visibility qualities he hoped to emulate in his own work.

Several artists have chosen to express their sentiments through music. Rapper King Kaka released an emotionally charged track titled A Tribute to Jowi Tinga Rao, mourning a leader who endured years of political struggle. Pop singer Bahati followed with Bye Bye Baba, a song reflecting personal loss and uncertainty about Kenya’s future leadership.

Bahati described Raila as a strong supporter of young artists and a source of energy during political campaigns. The tributes have extended beyond Kenya’s borders. Tanzanian star Diamond Platnumz, who performed at Raila’s final campaign rally in 2022, shared a prayer for his soul, while gospel artist Christina Shusho released Pumzika Baba as a sign of solidarity with Kenyans.

Jamaican dancehall musician Vybz Kartel paid his respects through a TikTok video set to one of Raila’s speeches, and Ugandan legend Jose Chameleone described his passing as a loss for the entire continent.

In western Kenya, Ohangla artist Prince Indah released a moving piece reflecting the Luo community’s deep sense of loss. His song recalls Raila’s lifelong dedication to democracy and recognises the steadfast support of his family throughout his political journey.
