Uhuru: Becoming President was My Childhood Dream
Growing up I wanted to be like my father and one day become president of Kenya, Uhuru Kenyatta says.
Speaking at the official launch of MasterCard Foundation's Young Africa Works program in Nairobi, Uhuru explained that his childhood dream was to be like his father, Kenya's first President Jomo Kenyatta.
“Like every young person, I dreamt of being a success and everyone is a creature of environment that they grow up in, I would be lying if I did not say that I did not want to be like my father.”
He added: “The environment I grew up in inspired me to be the president of Kenya.”
Kenyatta was responding to a question by Purity Kendi, a MasterCard beneficiary, on his childhood aspirations and what inspired him.
At the same time, President Uhuru urged parents to stop paying so much focus on making money at the expense of inculcating good values to their children.
“I think we have lost that sense of family and grounding that some of us had the advantage of having, we have become too individualistic, materialistic and a lot of our children are losing hope because of the kind of environment they are growing in,” Kenyatta said.
“We need just to get back and recreate those values that our parents had and that we have unfortunately failed to pass on to our children. Recreating the values would, for instance, help us bring up a generation of Kenyans who have an opportunity that I had and help them become presidents, ministers, chief executive officer and not just think on how they are going to get next buck.”

Hakuna makosa yoyote mtoto kufikiria jambo ambalo atakalofanya atakapokuwa mtu mzima. Jambo lililo nyeti (crucial) ni kuwa wazo ulilofikiria halafu ukalipata sasa unalimudu (manage/handle)?
1. Ufisadi unapoteza shilingi bilioni 800,000,000,000.00 kila mwaka! Na wewe umeshikilia usukani (you are in the driver's seat)
2. Watu huuawa na waliohusika kuwaua hawashikwi. Kwa mfano, Jacob Juma na Chris Msando waliuawa kinyama na watu wengi. Je, imekuwakuwaje, waliohusika kuwaua mpaka sasa hawajashikwa?
3. Askari polisi wanawanyanyasa wananchi barabarani kila siku huku wakiomba na kupokea hongo. Siku hizi ambazo kuna simu za kiganjani (smart phones), jambo hili linaweza kumalizwa chini ya mwezi mmoja. Kwa nini huwapi wananchi ruhusa ya kuwanakili (record) majambazi askari polisi hawa wanapoomba na kupokea rushwa?
4. Mdogo wako anatoa hongo kanisani kila Jumapili na kuendelea na siasa 24/7. Kwa nini humkatazi na asipofuata maagizo yako, umfanye vile babako alivyomfanya Hayati Jaramogi Oginga Odinga? Yaani umwondoe kazini.
5. Kenya ni nchi yenye mataifa madogo (micronations) zaidi ya 40. Kwa nini umesahau na kuwapa watu kutoka kwenye mataifa mawili tu kazi zote zilizo muhimu nchini?
6. Siku hizi viongozi wa makanisa wanawatumia wafuasi kondoo (blind followers) ili kutajirika haraka. Kwa nini huwaambiii vingozi hawa waache kuwasumbua kwa kuombaomba wafuasi kondoo pesa na kufanya kama Musa alivyofanya alipokuwa jangwani? Inasemekana Musa alikuwa anasikia njaa halafu akamwomba "mungu" wake chakula. Mara moja, mikate ilianguka kutoka mbinguni kutokana na kitabu cha historia ya Wayahudi kinachoitwa biblia?
7. Umaskini mwingi unatokana na watu kuzaa watoto wengi ambao hawawezi kuwalisha chakula kizuri, kuwavisha nguo nzuri, kuwapa mahali pa kulala, na kuwalipia ada ya shule. Nchi haingezeki, kwa nini huwaambii watu wa Kenya wasizae zaidi ya watoto wawili? Yaani, kila mume na mke wake wazae watoto wawili tu!
8. Yakubidi ufanye kazi 24/7 ili madawa ya kulevya yasiingie nchini. Madawa haya yameharibu maisha ya vijana wengi nchini. Rafiki yangu mmoja kutoka Iraq aliniambia ya kwamba, siku za Saddam Hussein, mtumia madawa ya kulevya na mwuuza madawa ya kulevya wote walipokea risasi. Ndugu Saddam alipotimuliwa kutoka kazini na Wamarekani, sasa matumizi ya madawa ya kulevya ymesambaa kila mahali katika nchi ya Iraq. Isitoshe, sasa kuna malaya pia.
