The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has warned of a new scheme where bank employees withdraw cash from customers' accounts without their knowledge.

This comes after a bank manager was arrested and charged with illegally withdrawing Sh25 million from customers' fixed accounts.

DCI said Peter Sungu, an employee of Diamond Trust Bank Kisii branch, is among three bank staff facing charges of theft of customers’ cash.

Sungu was arraigned at Milimani court and charged after his criminal activities were discovered through an internal reconciliation process.

"Mr.Peter Sungu Nyakomitta, a Branch Manager with Diamond Trust Bank( DTB) in Kisii was arrested and arraigned in Milimani Law Courts for stealing Sh25Million from customer’s fixed account numbers. The theft was discovered after an internal reconciliation process was done," DCI said in a tweet.

Also arrested and charged was Habil Onyango, a Relations Officer with Family Bank who allegedly stole Sh1.5 million from customers’ accounts through SIM swaps.

Another suspect identified as Habil Onyango Owiti, a Fosa Manager and strong room custodian with Harambee Sacco Ltd was also arrested over theft of Sh1,783,392 which was meant for the Sacco Area delegates and miscellaneous expenditure.

DCI boss George Kinoti said most fraud cases reported were found to have been executed by employees of banks, mobile money service providers and regulators. Kinoti urged banking and lending institutions to conduct thorough audit on their staffers.
