Raila Convenes ODM Crisis Meeting to Resolve Rift Over Ties With Ruto Government

Raila Odinga, leader of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), has summoned an emergency Central Committee meeting on Tuesday to address escalating internal disputes over the party's evolving relationship with President William Ruto's Kenya Kwanza administration.

The high-stakes gathering seeks to resolve mounting tensions that have publicly exposed fractures within the party ranks and clarify ODM's official position on its engagement with the government. The urgency of this meeting follows weeks of inconsistent messaging from ODM leaders regarding the party's role within what some are calling a broad-based government. While Raila has publicly hinted at supporting collaboration with the current administration, key party figures, most notably Secretary-General Edwin Sifuna, have vocally opposed closer ties.

Sifuna’s persistent criticisms of the government have drawn sharp rebukes from fellow ODM legislators, who argue that the party's improved cooperation with the ruling coalition necessitates more unified conduct. Speaking recently at a funeral in Ugunja Constituency, Raila defended the diversity of opinions within ODM, emphasising the party’s democratic ethos.

“We have a democratic party where people are free to express their opinions," Raila said.

He also criticised media portrayals of his comments, specifically accusations that journalists had misrepresented his stance on Sifuna’s pronouncements. "All I said was that everyone, including Sifuna, has a right within the party to express their opinion. That does not mean I support them," he clarified.

The internal strife has prompted strong reactions from ODM lawmakers aligned with the government. Samuel Atandi, the Alego Usonga MP and Chair of the National Assembly Budget and Appropriations Committee, dismissed Sifuna’s position, declaring that the party’s alliance with Kenya Kwanza is “unstoppable.” Speaking at a school event in Siaya County, Atandi stressed that ODM leaders from the region are well-informed and fully committed to the partnership with Ruto’s administration.

Siaya Senator Dr Oburu Oginga also weighed in, cautioning Sifuna against overestimating his influence. Drawing parallels with former ODM Secretary-General Ababu Namwamba, Oginga suggested that popularity alone does not guarantee political longevity. “If someone thinks he is too popular, let him consult Ababu Namwamba for some lessons," he remarked.

The Central Committee, a key organ within ODM's governance structure, comprises the party leader, his deputies, national officials, and appointed members. It is the primary forum for resolving internal disputes and shaping the party’s strategic direction.
