Dedan Kimathis Secret Letters Laid Bare

One night before freedom hero Dedan Kimathi was executed, he made two requests: That he repents his sins and that the church takes his son to school.

This is contained in secret letters Kimathi wrote to a priest on February 18 1957, a day before he was executed.

For the first time, the secret letters of the freedom fighter lay bare a spiritual man who cared deeply for his family.

Many Kenyans have just seen the man in a black and white photo, dreadlocked and chained.

HAND WRITTEN

In a hand written letter addressed to Fr Nicola Marino, the priest who was then in charge of Nyeri Mathari Mission, Kimathi asked that his son Meshack Waciuri be enrolled in one of the Catholic schools.

“I request for a favour -take my son to school. I trust that something must be done to see that he starts earlier under your care,” the letter acquired from Istituto Missioni Consola (Institute of Consolata Missionaries) in Rome states.

He made a plea that all the Fathers , Brothers and Sisters within the Catholic hierarchy pray for him and asks God to forgive him for all his sins.

He also asked the priest to comfort his aging mother when he dies.

According to the letter, Kimathi expressed optimism that his wife, who was also serving jail term at Kamiti, would be released soon.

According to Evelyn Wanjogu, a daughter of Kimathi, her ageing mother Mukami, indeed confirmed to them the handwriting on the letter was Kimathi’s.

“It is true my father wrote that letter and asked Fr Marino to take care of his family. And Fr Marino did all what he was asked and thanks to him, my mother grew stronger despite losing such a brave and loving husband,” says Ms Wanjogu.

STAUNCH CHRISTIAN

According to another letter, a late reply from Fr Marino dated March 19, 1969, which acknowledged that he had received the letter from Kimathi, the freedom fighter was a staunch Christian.

He was initiated to the Catholic doctrine since childhood. On the night before execution, and after confessing his sins and asking for forgiveness, Fr Marino’s reply letter indicates that Kimathi was baptized and given the Holy Communion.

Kimathi worked as untrained teacher, a clerk and a farm manager in Nyeri and Rift Valley before joining the struggle for freedom.

He was shot and arrested at a valley in Kahigai-ini village, Tetu where his family, relatives and friends and officials visit every February 18 to mark the day.

I don't give a DIME about this man Dedan Kimathi BECAUSE if he had lived to see Independence, he would like many Kikuyus ended up being one of the greatest Post_Independence Land grabbers in Kenya. So his death MUST have saved Taita-Taventans and Rift-Valleans 30,000 or more acres of land that he would have grabbed if he had stayed alive.

Prejudicial assumptions like these cause unnecessary discord between and amongst different people, ethnic communities and entire nations. Yours is a classical symptom of a malignant form of cancer variously called prejudice, ethnocentrism, jingoism and the like. You are like Kikuyu grass - the type every peace loving Kenyan is trying to eradicate from the country. Why condemn an innocent dead man who died because he believed that Kenya should be free? Be proud of him coz if it wasn't for his kind (selfless, patriotic Kenyans), u wouldn't be talking way you talk now. Finally, whether you like it or not, you are simply a Mr Nobody and this world will forget you within hrs of your demise. But Kimathi's name lives on, almost 60 years later!

I personally knew Fr. Nicolas Marino and was one of my teachers at one time in my school life. He proudly spoke of this letter that Kimathi sent to him and how he fulfilled what he was requested.

The ordinary Mzungu brought colonialism but there are those Wazungu Missionaries who brought Christianity and that light continues to shine brightly in Kenya.

May Kimathi our hero be a happy man with God in Heaven as we continue to enjoy the fruits of the freedom he fought for up to his death.

Which fruits?Kenya was not ripe for independence in 1963.It would have been better if colonialism continued instead of worshipping African gods including murderers and thieves as is the case today. What can you say of a person worships a boy-RAO who sponsored the massacre of 1300 Kenyans(90 percent from Kikuyu tribe) because he was defeated in vote theft by another gangster called Kibaki? What can you say about those who worship expired gangster-Kamau Muigai who grabbed 500000 acres of land?

Do we ever ask ourselves questions as to why these wazungus were so inhuman and nothing changes todate? Had the mzungu not come to Africa in the name of "colonizing" plus bring christianity (to cover up for the.. wrong doings) the world would be a better place to live in. Africans are the smartest amongst all no matter what they write in books etc.

Long live the name Kimathi and the rest of the freedom fighters including my grandfather and anybody who was tortured during the colonial period. Women, daughters, Wives, sons were left to fend for themselves. May their souls rest in peace!!!!!!!!!!!!!
