Meru Woman Stranded in Saudi Arabia for Two Months After Employer Dispute
A Kenyan woman from Meru County is reportedly stranded in Saudi Arabia, where she has remained for two months under difficult conditions following a dispute with her employer.
Jane Kathure Kanyua is said to have been confined to a recruitment agency office since the disagreement. According to her family and close associates, she has not received adequate assistance during this period, including access to medical care or support to return to Kenya.
Relatives report that her health has worsened, citing symptoms such as fever, ongoing vomiting, and low blood pressure. They express concern that her condition continues to deteriorate, particularly in the absence of proper medical attention.
The situation is reported to have escalated after her employer returned her to the agency instead of resolving the dispute. Her family claims the agency has refused to arrange her repatriation and has asked her to pay for her own flight home, a cost they say they cannot afford.
Appeals for assistance have been directed to Kenyan authorities, including the Ministry of Foreign and Diaspora Affairs, as well as to humanitarian organisations and the public. Those advocating on her behalf say urgent action is needed to ensure she receives medical care and is safely returned to Kenya.
The case reflects ongoing concerns about the treatment of Kenyan migrant workers in Gulf countries. Reports in recent years have highlighted issues such as contractual disputes, poor working conditions, and limited access to support during emergencies, raising questions about oversight of recruitment processes and labour agreements.
There has been no official response from the recruitment agency involved or from Kenyan diplomatic representatives in Saudi Arabia. The lack of communication has increased concern among her family and supporters.
