US-Based Kenyan Richard Areba Launches Child Nutrition Programme for Vulnerable Communities
Kenyan philanthropist Richard Ogachi Areba is expanding healthcare, nutrition, and mental health programmes in Kenya through a series of targeted initiatives focused on vulnerable communities.
Areba, who is based in the United States, has developed a nursing home in Thika that began as a small maternity centre and has grown into a key facility for low-income families. Over the past decade, more than 7,000 women have delivered their babies safely at the centre, contributing to efforts to reduce maternal mortality.
The facility is accredited by the Social Health Authority and now performs caesarean sections, increasing its ability to provide essential care. Areba remains actively involved in overseeing its programmes despite living abroad.
In response to high rates of childhood malnutrition, Areba introduced the “An Egg a Day” initiative, which provides eggs to children under five who are at risk of stunted growth and developmental challenges. Community health volunteers distribute the eggs and offer guidance on nutrition and food preparation.
To support the programme, Areba has established a poultry farm on four acres of land to supply eggs to communities in Nairobi, Kiambu, Kilifi, and the North Eastern region. The organisation has also expanded into adolescent mental health services. The nursing home now offers counselling aimed at giving teenagers a safe environment to discuss personal challenges and receive support.
The approach focuses on early intervention to address mental health concerns before they develop into more serious conditions. Areba has outlined plans to build a 1,000-bed hospital in Kenya, with the aim of meeting standards comparable to those in the United States.
