Man Sentenced to 30 Years for Killing Wife for Joining Instagram

A Mombasa court has sentenced Murad Awadh Mbarak to 30 years in prison for the brutal murder of his wife, Nuru Ibrahim, in June 2022.

The High Court described the killing as exceptionally cruel, noting that Ibrahim was stripped naked and repeatedly stabbed in front of her children. Relatives who attempted to intervene were also attacked, highlighting Mbarak's high moral culpability and danger to public safety.

The court emphasised the trauma caused to the children and the wider societal impact of such violence, asserting that the sentence should serve as both punishment and a public condemnation of domestic abuse. The court heard that Mbarak’s jealousy and insecurity were triggered by his wife’s decision to join Instagram, which he feared would lead to unwanted attention from men.

Witnesses revealed that the couple's marriage had been troubled for some time, with frequent disputes over finances and property. Ibrahim had confided in family members about her desire to leave the marriage and had taken steps to secure important documents before her death. She had also been threatened with violence and blackmail, including the circulation of nude photographs.

On the night of the murder, neighbours reported hearing cries for help. Ibrahim's 11-year-old daughter testified that she witnessed her father beating and stabbing her mother. Forensic evidence later confirmed that blood on Mbarak’s clothes and weapon matched that of the deceased.

Mbarak, in mitigation, claimed to be a first-time offender, expressed remorse, and cited his four years on remand. He sought a plea bargain late in the trial, but the prosecution rejected it, describing it as insincere and untimely. The court agreed, saying that true remorse must be shown promptly.

A Victim Impact Statement presented in court revealed the severe psychological and emotional harm caused to the children, who continue to experience nightmares, fear, and regression at school. The family is also facing financial hardship, as Ibrahim had been the primary breadwinner.
