Kilgoris Hospital Shut Down After Armed Attack on Health Workers

Transmara West Sub-County Hospital in Kilgoris was closed late Tuesday after health workers were attacked by armed individuals, forcing the suspension of all medical services.

The attack occurred when a group brought a road accident victim to the hospital for treatment. Medical staff assessed the patient and advised that they be transferred to a mission hospital with better capacity to manage severe trauma. According to hospital staff, the recommendation angered the group, who then assaulted several nurses and caused panic within the facility.

Following the incident, hospital management shut down operations indefinitely, citing concerns over staff safety. By Wednesday morning, the hospital gates remained closed, leaving patients unable to access services.Residents arriving at the facility expressed frustration and concern. Some had been referred for diagnostic procedures such as scans and X-rays, while others were seeking treatment for their children. With the hospital closed, many were unsure where to seek alternative care.

Transmara West Sub-County Hospital serves as a key referral centre in Narok County, providing essential services to residents of Kilgoris and surrounding areas. Its closure has disrupted access to medical care across the region.

The incident comes amid heightened security concerns in Transmara West, which was recently classified as a security-disturbed area by Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen. Additional security personnel had been deployed to the region following reports of rising tensions.
