Kenyan-Born Activist Lilian Seenoi Elected Councillor in Northern Ireland, UK

Kenyan-born Lilian Seenoi-Barr has been elected a councillor in Northern Ireland, United Kingdom. 

Narok Senator Ledama Olekina congratulated her for the achievement, highlighting that she is the first black person to get the position. 

"Congratulations to my baby sister Lilian Seenoi. The first-ever black person to be elected as a councillor in Northern Ireland, United Kingdom. May the Good Lord open many doors for you," Ledama said.  

Seenoi noted that she is humbled to have emerged as the favorite contestant of the people of Foyleside. She recalled her entry into Derry City and Strabane District Council where she was chosen by SDLP members. Upon her selection, Seenoi vowed to work hard and deliver for the people. At the council, she advocated for immigrants, asylum seekers, and refugees who have decided to establish their life in Derry.  

"At the time I made a commitment that I would work tirelessly to earn people's trust and deliver for the local area," she said. 

She was delighted to have garnered nearly 1000 first preference votes and an electoral mandate that called on her to work for the people. She has been steadfast in fighting for the rights of the Maasai women and girls. She also helped in founding the Maasai education discovery-brides rescue project in Kenya in 1999.
