Photo of Small Kenyan Kids Waiting Outside School Gate at 5:30am Causes a Stir Online

A photo of small Kenyan primary school pupils waiting outside their school for the gate to be opened at 5:30 am has caused a stir on social media.

The photo was shared on Twitter by a user identified as Moseax who said it was taken at St. Paul Kabuku Primary School in Limuru at around 5:30 am.

At the time, the institution's security guard was allegedly asleep and the kids had waited outside the gate for some time.

"St paul kabuku students in Limuru awaiting their watchman to wake up...The time is 5:30.
@ProfMagoha Why subject children to this? Official Time for schools should be communicated by the government," Moseax tweeted.

Kenyans online reacted to the image with some blaming the kids' parents while others faulted the government for failing to strictly enforce school reporting hours.

@chegewagithinji said: "Here I blame the parents, why torture your lil one like this."

@vidijah tweeted: "Address that issue to that school not magoha."

@jhorraceo noted: "I blame the parents. Why would I allow My kids out of My House at that time?
Mine go to school at 7:40am & still perform better than the early birds."

@gideondinho stated: "I doubt it is the watchman...ongea na wazazi 5:30am is too early for those lil ones."

@kateakinyiab said: "No this is definitely not okay.. hii hapana.. both wazazi na gava wako na jukumu la kuhakikisha it is stopped."

This is not the first time the issue of official reporting time in schools has been raised by Kenyans.

Photos of kindergarten kids being picked up from various estates in Nairobi and other areas of the country as early as 4 am have been shared online.

Last year, the Ministry of Education directed all primary and secondary schools to observe the official operating hours for all day public and private institutions.

I blame the parents. How can you take a kinder-garden students to school at 5.30 am. Even university classes do not start at 5.30am. Take the kids to local public school until they are standard 4. Many doctors, professors and wakubwa went to public schools without shoes. Most of them worn shoes for the first time when they were joining form 1. Hata English they started speaking when they joined form 1. That did not prevent them from achieving their goals in life.

@kenya true.Tye parents r to blame here not the schools.Wazazi wadrop the kids there either juu they want to go to work or some shitty things but i doubt the school. starts at that time. Also don't blame the watchman juu pengine kazi yake nikufungua gate from 6:30 or 7am for instructions. So let's wait to hear what went wrong but i can guarantee you the problems is the parent nonsense.Kinder is supposed to start from 8:30-3pm not 5:30 n Actually from kinder to class 3;starts 8:30-3 then 4-8 7:45-3:30p

Most of you commenting here either mko wajinga or you are pretenders. Thing is, there are hundreds of thousands of people, both men and women who struggle to eke out a living, often having to accept extremely low paying jobs that require them to report very early in the morning. If they don’t, they starve or lose the little roof over their head. So they choose the lesser devil - dumping their kids at school like this. Very terrible for the kids & I hate it but what to do? This is what Trump meant when he called Africa a shithole .... it can’t even take care of it’s most vulnerable. The average Kenyan legislator is an idiot

For heaven's sake the Limuru we know?, where mother's, grammars, great grammars of cold generation is..., I think most of this parents are sleeping. Wake the government, start from the Chiefs, they are eyes of the government, if they Gail walk to the DOs offices, let them know that you have voices. Let them talk on your behalf to the government. This is punishing innocent children. I wonder if this children had drunk or eaten anything, and further they had slept late after pages and pages of home work. Reforms starts from you.you better die fighting for your rights, rather stay on fearwhen waiting to see such kids go through such a life.

Are we getting soft,or more caring? Dont blame the parents. They are not stupid. If I feel that my kids does not have to wake up at 5am, I will not let that happen-school or no school. To me waking up that early does not seem to be the problem.
Other than for security reasons, I see no problem.Kids wake up that early, after agood night's sleep.
As for the watchman,is this the only time he has been late?IF its atrend, and puts the kids at risk, fire him.

Mkenya halisi, ihave wondered about that question you posed alot.Seems like common sense but iguess not.Afellow has two wives,8kids and subsists on 1 acre of land.Eventually this"recklessness" becomes a burden to society.

@Maxiley, what would happen if the government formed a "Board of Castration" basically to castrate the likes you have stated above? Would they(board) accept bribes? Judging from the past trends in Kenya, of course. How about one or two child policy for at least 10 years? I don't think the egomaniacs in parliaments would pass anything close to that. Guess experience will always be our best teacher in the end.

@Mugukuyu, do you remember not too long ago,Kenyan University beat Harvard in an international law debate, and Kenyans correctly predicted that the major USA media would not mention it?
Well, "Board of Castration" would have all world power media send their best investigative journalists to Kenya, for as long as the story is in the air.Ican also envision a picture of testacles between an adjustable wrench to underscore the story.

What would happen is that all media power houses would send their best investigative journalists to Kenya for as long as the story is alive.I can also envision apicture of avice grip on testacles as the backdrop...to underscore the nature of the act.

@Maxiley, you are right and Wolf Blitzer would have some breaking news..Anything to reduce blacks would be welcome news. Anything to underscore black intelligence as far as the Strathmore law students win is concerned would be against Western media white supremacists agenda. Hence the blackout.

That’s just gambling with your kids life. This ain’t the 80s or even 90s when kids could be unsupervised with minimal danger. Won’t judge anyone but I would never put any kid ,leave alone mine, in that situation. Sleep is one of the major fundamentals of healthy growth. I bet you lots of hours are wasted in school daily due to fatigue.
