Gov't to Launch Central Digital Identification System for All Kenyans

The government is set to create a single digital registration and identification platform for all Kenyans.

ICT Cabinet Secretary Joe Mucheru said the process of setting up of the platform dubbed, National Integrated Identity Management System is at an advanced stage.

“It’s critical that we have one approach as government where we have a single source of truth, a central reference for the registration information and data about our citizens. It will be one database for all Kenyans and not only over 18 but it’s everybody. This will help us to deliver services to our citizens in a very efficient way,” said Mucheru.

He pointed out that the system will keep information about every Kenyan citizen from birth to death and enable the government monitor the population register. It will also help in detecting fraud, impersonation and other criminal activities.

“The initiative is aimed at consolidating population registration information into a single database for ease of verification by both government and private bodies,” he said.

Crucial documents held by a citizen including birth certificate, school certificate, driving license, Kenya Revenue Authority PIN and passport will be accessed at the touch of a button.

Agencies such as National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF), National Social Security Fund (NSSF) and Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) will also be able to use the data.
