Global Online Scams: Kenyans, Nigerians Among over 200 Arrested by US Authorities

Kenyans are among close to 300 suspects who were arrested by United States authorities in connection with a global online scam.

The US Department of Justice (DOJ) said 281 cybercriminals were arrested in 12 countries during a four-month-long operation that ended this month, according to Voice of America.

The suspects include 167 from Nigeria, 74 in the United States, 18 from Turkey and 15 from Ghana. Other arrests were made in Kenya, France, Italy, Japan, Malaysia, and the United Kingdom.

“Foreign citizens perpetrate many BEC [Business Email Compromise] scams.  Those individuals are often members of transnational criminal organizations, which originated in Nigeria but have spread throughout the world,” US DOJ said in a statement.

The crackdown was carried out by the DOJ and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). The DOJ said $3.7 million was recovered during the operation.

“We’re sending a clear message to the criminals who orchestrate these BEC schemes,” Christopher Wray, the FBI director warned.

The DOJ said the suspects used romance scams, employment opportunities scams, fraudulent online vehicle sales scams, rental scams, and lottery scams to con their victims.

The DOJ statement did not mention the number of Kenyan suspects arrested during the crackdown dubbed Operation Rewired.

“The same criminal organizations that perpetrate BEC also exploit individual victims, often real estate purchasers, the elderly, and others, by convincing them to make wire transfers to bank accounts controlled by the criminals.”

“The devastating effects these cases have on victims and victim companies affect not only the individual business but also the global economy,” the DOJ stated.

Ninety percent of the World scammers are Nigerians and it doesn't matter which country it is because they have immigrated to every country in the World including Vatican. Personally I would not transact any business with any Nigerian whether he is a pope of Catholic Church or President of Nigeria himself because the end result is a cry. No honest deal can ever come from a Nigerian and this has been established time after time. So reader, protect yourself and stay out of Nigerian business

Mr. Mujuaji, I agree with you. Kenyans are no better than Nigerians. They both have something bad embedded in their DNA which defines their outlook in life. Kenyans learn from a very young age, wittingly or unwittingly, that it is okay to give a policeman or a government official Chai Kidogo if you want to have your things done. When they grow up to take over responsibilities from their aging peers they also demand similar Chai kidogo. The new Kenyan generation that is offspring of pre-independent Kenya have become complicity in corruption because that is all they have ever known. A common man does not see anything wrong with corruption because at one time or another it has helped him achieve something he could not have imagined he could achieve in a government office. Government ineptitude breeds corruption and since that trend was bred in the first administration it will take generations before it is fully eradicated in Kenya. Similar thing can be said of Nigeria scams. Nigerians kids are taught how to scam at kindergarten level or as soon as they start talking regardless of their tribal affiliation. In the West kids games challenge kids to outsmart batman but in Nigeria kids games are created geared at scamming batman. Nigeria has the most igneous scammers in the World that has even warranted a creation of a special task force by US secret service. Because Nigeria's scamming business is institutionalized Nigerian government allows its citizen to impersonate government officials if a scam is targeted at a foreigner without any repercussion. No scammer that has targeted foreigners has ever gone to jail in Nigeria. Nigerian scamming business is the second highest foreign currency earner after oil to the Nigerian treasury

This is why i love North America. Bring ushenzi na ujuaji and no matter how long it takes, the law of the land takes you out with vengeance.
My advice to these thugs is work hard, play by the rules and no b--shit will follow you.

In the US, Nigerians are known for scamming. It is easy to recognize African faces in America, because we look different. When arrested in America, most Nigerians say that they are Kenyans, because they can speak English, like Kenyans, who don't raise a red flag. It then depends on whether the Arresting Policeman will do a 'background check', to confirm this. Most of them don't do it. I believe that these are the 'Kenyans', who are mentioned here.

The best way to enjoy mwakilishi is to go straight to comments where you will hear a lot from kenyans of all walks of lives.I cautioned before this Negro psychologist named KEN MOTLEY that if you don’t have any clues about a certain society or nation don’t jump into commenting as you had been doing here in mwakilishi.
Let me make straight, my last depression was in 2007 when I was going thru a nasty divorce from a Negro woman here in West Coast, She had the house but ended up losing it two year later, I got piece of mind, the best education ( not thru affirmative action) and guess what, she is battling terminal stage of breast cancer with all her big breasts being chopped off.(she had big boobs size of head which I guess has only a GED) I got a wonderful kikuyu woman who works harder than a hungry female lion on hunting mission, and I work only 8 hrs a day raising 3 kikuyu boys here paying mortgage and not rent.So I don’t know what kind of depression am going thru Mr psychologist.
Lastly, Most Nigerians are totally untrustworthy, no matter what tribe, so don’t think I will denounce what they are going thru in South Africa, actually I wish they were all burnt beyond recognition!!!. In 1995 before I emigrated here, I witnessed by my naked eyes a Nigerian being castrated in one of Nairobi suburbs since he was a serial conman and he messed up with a great a politician by then.
