Celebrated Kenyan Referee Aden Marwa, Who Was Set to Officiate FIFA World Cup Matches, Banned from Football for Life

Celebrated Kenyan referee Aden Marwa, who was dropped from the list of those who were set to officiate the ongoing 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia has been handed a life ban from all football activities.

The ban was announced by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) disciplinary committee following a bribery scandal that saw him lose the opportunity of becoming the first Kenyan to officiate a World Cup match.

“The following decisions were taken by the CAF Disciplinary Board regarding the referees involved: Mr. Marwa Rage, assistant referee (Kenya); life ban from all CAF related football activities," part of CAF disciplinary committee ruling read.

Marwa was captured on camera by an investigative journalist allegedly receiving a bribe of $600 US (Sh60,000) in order to influence the outcome of a match during the 2018  Championship of African Nations (CHAN) held in Morocco.

Marwa had made it to the list of 63 match officials selected to officiate the ongoing FIFA World Cup in Russia, a task that would have earned him close to Sh3 million.

He had been chosen to officiate the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, but was not assigned any match during the event and was looking to make his debut in Russia.

Ten other officials involved in the bribery scandal also received disciplinary measures ranging from between 2 to 10 years ban.

Come on! That was a harshy sentence to a poor man from Kenya, FIFA itself is full of corruption, did they hear his side of story regarding a mere $600 bribe? Did they do a research to prove that in Kenya even an unborn child is corrupt?? He could have clearly told them (FIFA) " the only corrupt kenyan you should trust is the dead one" ok welcome aboard everyone.

The culture we have adopted back in Kenya will not sell outside. Our corruption is giving us a bad name abroad. I hope through such an example we will learn to earn an honest buck. God help us.

I think that journalist wanted to make a name for himself. I did not see him handing the said 600$. Who can proof the journalist actually gave the kenya ref that amount..The sound from the video was low quality...I couldn't hear him telling the ref to fix a match...I sympathise with the ref for being a sacrificial lamb

@Bartenge, you should know that what led to the final judgement is more that what you are trying to decipher from the video... or even what was presented in the article. If you got the transcript of what transpired in the courtroom, you would have a different thinking.

Good for him....Kenya & Kenyans in general are a very corrupt lot. Wish this kind of punishment could be meted out to public officials in government who are corrupt......

Udaku ndiyo umemmaliza. $600 was dangled before his lusty eyes he forgot the millions he would have made genuinely officiating the “beautiful game”. What a shame.

@ Kikuyu wamjomba, unfortunately I agree with you. This is a harsh punishment for a small bribe of $600,when corrupt fellow,Sepp Bltter, former FIFA boss of 17 years was handed only a ban of 8 years after a scandal of over 2 million dollars. Its the small fish that get fried in corruption, that's why it saves.
Having said thim, Marwa has only himself to blame. They say a mark of a man of integrity is in doing the right thing even when nobody is looking.Yes unfortunately for him someone was looking when he was doing a bad thing.
Corruption has permeated our social fiber so much that people feel that if they dont act in it, they are the odd ones out,and will miss out. This perception has to change, and change avery quickly otherwise we are in deep trouble.Corruption has become a defacto
