NEMA Threatens Closure of 107 Clubs and Restaurants for Noise Pollution

The National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) has given 107 entertainment venues across Kenya seven days to comply with noise pollution regulations or face closure.
In a public notice issued on Monday, NEMA directed the affected establishments, including clubs, bars, lounges, and restaurants, to submit specific environmental compliance documents. These include a valid Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) licence, an up-to-date Environmental Audit (EA), proof of business incorporation, a CR-12 form listing directors and shareholders, and a report detailing the noise control measures in place. Each venue is also required to explain why enforcement action should not be taken against them. The enforcement action follows a rise in complaints from the public about excessive noise, particularly from nightlife establishments operating near residential areas.
NEMA says that many of the businesses on the list had previously been served with Environmental Restoration Orders but failed to meet compliance requirements. The crackdown covers venues nationwide, with Nairobi County among the areas most affected.
Establishments in Kilimani, Ruiru, Uthiru, Ruaka, and along Kiambu Road and Riverside Drive have been named, including repeat offenders such as Habanos and Quiver, which have faced previous closure notices. Other towns listed include Oyugis, Kabarnet, Meru, Kakamega, Webuye, and Nanyuki, highlighting the expansion of entertainment venues in regional and peri-urban areas.
In the coastal region, a crocodile farm in Mombasa and a backpackers’ hostel in Nyali have also been cited. NEMA says that the move is part of ongoing efforts to enforce environmental compliance in the hospitality sector and to address public health concerns linked to noise pollution.
The full list of affected establishments is available on NEMA’s official website and social media channels.
