Kenya Needs You More, Gachagua Tells Raila After AU Defeat

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has publicly expressed his support for Raila Odinga following Odinga's recent defeat in the African Union Commission (AUC) Chairmanship election held on February 15.

In a social media statement released on Sunday, Gachagua praises Odinga's energetic and tenacious campaign in a highly competitive race.
Gachagua characterizes Odinga as the "indefatigable Lion of Africa," commending his resolve and vigour throughout the election process. He notably references Odinga's second-place finish to underscore that the outcome reflected the democratic nature of the election rather than a lack of leadership capabilities on Odinga's part.

"Raila Odinga, you displayed tremendous energy and resilience, representing Kenya with pride in a fiercely contested race for the AUC Chairmanship," Gachagua said.

He mentions that Odinga's performance has invigorated the Kenyan spirit and engendered hope across the continent. In a rare display of solidarity between the two political figures, Gachagua emphasizes that Odinga's recent loss has not diminished his stature as a leader. Suggesting that this setback may provide an opportunity for Odinga to refocus on Kenyan politics, Gachagua remarks, "Africa needed you, but perhaps your destiny lies in addressing the challenges at home. Your leadership is still crucial for Kenya's progress. Welcome back, Raila Odinga. East or West, home is best."

Odinga was eliminated in the sixth round of voting, with Djibouti's Mahmoud Ali Youssouf ultimately securing the chairmanship. The election results prompted a range of reactions across Kenya. While some celebrated the outcome, others, particularly supporters of President William Ruto, voiced disappointment. Following Odinga's prompt concession, discussions have intensified among Kenyan lawmakers regarding the nation’s relationship with the African Union.

Some legislators, like Homabay MP Peter Opondo Kaluma, have called for a reevaluation of Kenya's involvement with the AU, while others, including Narok Senator Ledama Olekina, have suggested a restructuring of the Union itself. Gachagua's endorsement of Odinga emerges amidst shifting political alliances, as the former Deputy President has recently aligned himself with the opposition. Meanwhile, Odinga had previously distanced himself from opposition politics to collaborate with President Ruto during his AUC campaign.
