The United States government has provided Nairobi county government with Sh9.3 billion in funding.
Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja is excited about a financial support package that will be used to improve transport and land use planning. The $60 million Threshold program, initiated by the Millenium Challenge Corporation, will fund enhancements including walkways, cycle paths, and Bus Rapid Transit financing. Deputy CEO of the Millenium Challenge Corporation Chidi Blyden recently visited Nairobi to facilitate the collaboration between the two governments.
In addition, the funds will be used to enhance the connectivity for both commuters and pedestrians. Governor Sakaja clarifies that the BRT lines will not be financially supported by the United States government, however, they will assist in leasing and maintaining buses for Line 2. This new route, which covers a distance of 31 kilometres will pass through Lang'ata Road, Ngong, Juja, and Komarock roads before reaching Ruiru. It will include important stops at Dandora, Kariobangi, and Gikomba Market. Once the project is completed, Governor Sakaja envisions the implementation of a more comprehensive compact program specifically tailored for Nairobi.
With a populace of 4.4 million, Nairobi and its surrounding counties in the Nairobi Metropolitan Area assume a significant role in the overall population count of the nation, as indicated by the 2019 census data. A considerable proportion of Kenya's population, amounting to millions of people, rely on public transportation. Also, 41% of Nairobi residents use public transport daily, while 40% prefer walking, and 13% opt for private vehicles. The implementation of the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system aims to mitigate congestion in Nairobi's Central Business District, providing a reliable mode of transportation. This rollout will not only address transportation issues but also reduce travel time and air pollution.
The government has identified five corridors to ease traffic in Nairobi. Line 1 will span from James Gichuru road-Waiyaki Way to JKIA, covering a distance of 20km. Line 3 will connect Githurai to Moi Avenue in the CBD, concluding at Kenyatta National Hospital. BRT Line Four, also known as the Kifaru line, is expected to pass through Mama Lucy, Jogoo Rd, the CBD, Valley Rd, Yaya Centre, Kawangware, Kikuyu, and Gitaru. This project aligns with President William Ruto's commitment to incentivizing the adoption of electric mass transit systems in urban areas and implementing electric vehicle charging infrastructure across cities and highways.
Sakaja's strategic plan aims to improve transportation systems that are efficient, safe, and environmentally friendly, as well as urban development. The government has allocated Sh1.1 billion for the Nairobi Bus Rapid Transit project to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and alleviate congestion. In the 2022-23 budget, the BRT project received Sh1.2 billion. Experts anticipate that the introduction of the BRT system will furnish a reliable means of transportation for daily travellers, ease the traffic congestion in the main commercial area, tackle transportation issues, reduce travel time, and curb air pollution.
At the Climate Summit in September, Transport CS Kipchumba Murkomen disclosed that the initial phase of the BRT system is projected to be up and running by December 2024.
“The roll-out of a Bus Rapid Transit system (with the first line is set to be ready for use by December 2024),” he said.

America should know better than to grant money to to be managed by people who are known for nothing except stealing. This grant will be stolen on the first day, nothing will come of it.
If done well this could reduce the millions "we" lose daily stuck in traffic. Also the electric buses that were put for display during the Summit week won't just be for display anymore.
Move capital of gov, ministries, corporations, three arms out to a brand new futuristic city.
