Moi Burial: Government Declares Tuesday, February 11th a Public Holiday

The government has declared Tuesday, February 11th, a public holiday in honor of the late retired President Daniel Arap Moi.

This was announced by the Head of Public Service Joseph Kinyua while addressing the press at Harambee House in Nairobi on Thursday morning.

“The Government wishes to notify the public that Tuesday, February 11th has been declared a national holiday in the honor of the late Mzee Daniel Arap Moi,” said Kinyua, who is overseeing the burial arrangements.

In a gazette notice dated February 6th, Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i said the holiday will accord all Kenyans the opportunity to mourn the former president who ruled Kenya for 24 years.

Moi, who was Kenya’s second president, succumbed to a long illness on Tuesday at the Nairobi Hospital. He will be laid to rest at his home in Kabarak, Nakuru County on Wednesday, February 12th.

President Kenyatta said Moi will be accorded a state funeral, with all appropriate civilian and full military honors being rendered and observed.

Kinyua announced that there will be a state funeral on Tuesday, February 11th, followed by a state burial in Kabarak on Wednesday.
