Woman Arrested for Conning Kenyans of Millions while Posing as Nairobi Governor Sonko on Social Media

Police in Nairobi have arrested a 34-year-old woman for allegedly conning unsuspecting Kenyans of millions of shillings while posing as Governor Mike Sonko on social media.

The suspect identified as Christine Onyango Adhiambo is said to be a member of a syndicate that uses social media platforms to defraud Kenyans out of their hard-earned cash.

The syndicate allegedly uses several online accounts registered under the name of Governor to con gullible Kenyans.

Taking to social media, Sonko warned Kenyans against falling prey to the fraudsters.

“Many Kenyans have been conned by online fraudsters who have been using my name to commit fraud through fake Facebook accounts,” said Sonko.

“I’m happy to note security agencies have today arrested a couple of suspects in Nairobi’s Umoja estate. Any member of the public who has fallen prey to such fraudsters should report the cases to DCI, EACC or any other authority,” said Sonko.

Sonko also notified Kenyans that he operates only one Facebook account, which is verified.

A lady only identified as Lillian said she they were conned over Sh20,000 by members of the criminal group.

“They told us to form groups of 15 people each and register a group. They then said after all the registration process, we would be getting a grant of Ksh100,000, a house and a car for a successful group,” she said.

She said they were asked to contribute Sh15,000 for administration and registration of the group.

“We were brainwashed by this idea. They told us that residents in Kayole, Dandora, Githurai, Korogocho have benefitted,” added Lilian.

Buru Buru DCIO Aden Guyo said detectives are pursuing other members of the syndicate after Adhiambo gave them leads.

“This is going to be a breakthrough. I can assure all those who have been swindled huge amounts of money that their amount will be recovered,” said Guyo.

Adhiambo is being held at Buruburu police station ahead of arraignment in court.
