Eight People Die in a Grisly Road Crash in Meru

Eight people perished while several others sustained serious injuries after a public service matatu they were traveling in collided head on with a lorry at Ng’onyi area in Meru County on Saturday.

Eye witnesses said the passenger vehicle was trying to overtake a motorbike when it collided head on with an oncoming lorry.

Patrick Murithi, a resident present during the accident said that six people were rescued and rushed to Meru Teaching and Referral Hospital.

“The matatu had 10 passengers and eight of them, including the driver, died, Mr Murithi said.

Mt Kenya region Red Cross Coordinator Mugambi Gitonga, said that his team rescued two more people on arriving at the scene.

“Those in the lorry escaped unhurt. We cannot tell the number of those in the lorry but we have found a motorbike at the scene. We are yet to establish the owner and if he survived,” Gitonga said.
