Kenyans Advised Against Overstaying US Visas

The United States Embassy in Nairobi has issued a strong warning to Kenyan nationals regarding strict adherence to US visa rules.

This comes as officials increase efforts to inform applicants about the importance of following immigration regulations, especially after the introduction of tougher visa application procedures aimed at strengthening national security. A key point emphasized by the Embassy is the common misunderstanding that having a US visa guarantees a long stay.

In reality, the visa only permits travel to a US port of entry. The length of stay allowed is determined by Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers upon arrival. Travelers are advised to carefully check their “Admit Until Date” on the official I-94 website to avoid unintentionally overstaying.

Overstays carry serious consequences, including difficulties obtaining future visas and being barred from entering the United States. This advisory is timely, as the visa application process has recently changed. Applicants must now provide details of their social media accounts, including usernames and handles from the last five years.

This new requirement has sparked debate, with concerns raised about privacy and the challenges it poses for those with limited internet access or digital skills. Nonetheless, the Embassy stresses that failing to disclose this information or providing false details can result in immediate denial of the visa and future ineligibility.

These changes mark a stricter US immigration policy focused on enhanced screening and digital monitoring. While the US government frames these measures as necessary for national security, critics argue that they unfairly affect genuine travelers and compromise fairness.  For Kenyans planning to visit the United States, thorough preparation, truthful disclosure, and strict compliance with rules are essential.
