Kenyan Woman Fatally Shot by Ex-Partner in Ramsey, Minnesota

The Kenyan diaspora and the wider community in Ramsey, Minnesota, are in mourning following a devastating murder-suicide that claimed the lives of Hulda Bochere Mosiori and Mel Melchizedek, 51, her former partner. 

Hulda, 42, was a respected mental health nurse practitioner and mother of four. The incident occurred on the morning of April 22, 2025. Authorities responded to reports of a firearm-related confrontation at a residence on the 15200 block of Snowy Owl Street NW in Ramsey at approximately 8:33 a.m. Anoka County Sheriff’s Office deputies were dispatched after receiving reports that Melchizedek had confronted a neighbour with a firearm before returning to his home. 

This prompted a brief shelter-in-place order for nearby residents as law enforcement secured the area. Efforts to establish contact with individuals inside the residence were unsuccessful. Upon entering the home, officers discovered the bodies of Hulda and Melchizedek, both victims of fatal gunshot wounds. Preliminary investigations suggest that Melchizedek shot Hulda before taking his own life. The shelter-in-place order was subsequently lifted, with authorities confirming that there is no ongoing threat to the community.

The Midwest Medical Examiner’s Office, in collaboration with the Anoka County Sheriff’s Office and the Ramsey Police Department, is actively investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident, seeking to determine the motivations and sequence of events leading to the tragedy. Hulda Bochere Mosiori was a highly regarded mental health nurse practitioner known for her dedication and compassion. Originally from Kenya, she had established herself as a vital member of the healthcare community in the United States. 

Her work in psychiatric mental health care underscored her commitment to supporting individuals during their most vulnerable moments. She was also recognised as an entrepreneur. Hulda's sudden death has left her four children without their mother. The community is now rallying to provide support to her surviving children, offering emotional and practical assistance as they navigate this profound loss.

Mel Melchizedek, identified as the father of at least one of Hulda's children, was of Sierra Leonean descent. Authorities are exploring the dynamics of their relationship, which is reported to have deteriorated, as a potential factor in the murder-suicide. However, the official cause and motivation behind the incident remain under investigation. The tragedy has reverberated throughout the local neighbourhood in Ramsey and across the Kenyan diaspora in Minnesota, which numbers approximately 16,000 individuals. 

Neighbours have expressed disbelief and sorrow that such violence could occur in their typically quiet suburban community. Will Foster, a neighbour who witnessed the unfolding incident via his garage camera, recounts the presence of law enforcement officers with firearms and SWAT teams on his property. 

"It's mind-blowing, especially out here in the suburbs—you don't expect to see or hear anything like that going on in your neighbourhood," Foster said. 

Anjaleen Singh, another neighbour, voices concerns about the safety of families with young children in the community. Roselidah Nyaboke, a member of the Kenyan diaspora, has paid tribute to Hulda on social media, describing her as "a beloved daughter" and recognising her contributions as a psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner (PMHNP). Nyaboke urges the community to unite in support of Hulda's family during this difficult time.
