Kenyan Woman Abused in Saudi Arabia Safely Repatriated Following Government Intervention

A Kenyan woman who faced alleged abuse while working in Saudi Arabia has been safely returned home following a coordinated effort by government officials and local representatives.

Frenda Chelangat, from Cheptiret in Uasin Gishu County, had travelled to Saudi Arabia on a two-year domestic work contract before her employment turned into a distressing experience. Her situation became public after photographs circulated online showing her in apparent physical restraint and distress.

The images prompted swift intervention from Kenyan authorities to secure her release. Reports indicate that Chelangat’s difficulties began only weeks after arriving in Saudi Arabia. She allegedly endured mistreatment, unpaid wages, and severe psychological distress.

The photographs of her tied to a bed came to symbolise the risks faced by many Kenyan domestic workers in the Middle East and intensified calls for stronger protection measures. Her repatriation was made possible through the efforts of Kesses Member of Parliament CPA Julius Ruto, who worked closely with the Ministry of Foreign and Diaspora Affairs.

In a statement, Ruto expressed gratitude for Chelangat’s safe return and commended Principal Secretary Roseline Njogu for her prompt response and sustained engagement throughout the process. Chelangat’s case has renewed debate about Kenya’s labour migration policies and the safeguards in place for citizens working abroad.

While remittances from migrant workers play a key role in the economy, her experience has highlighted ongoing concerns about worker safety, the enforcement of bilateral agreements, and the need for more effective monitoring systems.
