British-Kenyans Undying Love for Country Amid Adversity
An ailing 75-year-old man is appealing to the Government to come to his aid.
Barry Leonard Humber came to Kenya from Britain in 1976 to oversee the construction and upgrade of hospitals including St Lukes Hospital-Kaloleni, Dreamland Medical Centre Kaptola-Kimilili, Nala Community Hospital-Kakamega, Sirisia, Naitiri and Mautuma and Sio Port Health centres.
After doing a superb job, Dr Humber claims that he was prevailed upon not to return to the UK by the then Vice President Daniel arap Moi and President Jomo Kenyatta so that he can pass on his skills to locals.
The holder of two PhDs in Building Science and Commercial Science and Special Building Technology agreed to stay on. In the process, he fell in love with the country and a Kenyan woman by the name Elizabeth.
As a result, in 1977, he sold everything he had acquired in Britain and started a new life in Kenya after acquiring a 38-acre farm in Malava.
Sadly, Humber, a Kenyan citizen who did a lot for this country, now lives in abject poverty in Kakoyi village in Malava.
"I came here in 1976 where upon Moi requested me to stay and get citizenship. I married a Kenyan Elizabeth in 1978 at Kakamega ACK Church after divorcing my British wife of six years. We had no children. My family prevailed upon me not to divorce but I live to regret the decision," said the humble-looking Humber from his Nala Community Hospital bed in Kakamega.
It is in Kakoyi where he lived with his wife, with whom he bore five children, before a secondary school teacher reportedly cut short his marital bliss.
"The teacher started dating my wife Elizabeth after we lived happily for 13 years. She then started selling my property, demolished my two permanent houses and walked away from our matrimonial bed. She sold the entire 38 acres, leaving me on a three-acre piece which she still swears she will sell," said Humber. The estranged couple divorced in 2005.
He adds: "The land was registered in my wifes name because I acquired it before getting Kenyan citizenship documents," he said.
Initially, Humber tried to block the sale of the property in court but he was unable to as he did not have money.
"I wish the State could be offering legal aid to victims of such instances. Where do I get Sh150,000 to pay an advocate to face perpetrators of my sufferings?" posed Humber who has blood pressure and cancer.
"It pains to see a bagasse processing industry set on my land emitting smoke that worsens my cancer situation."
The man who now lives in a small mud house is so in love with Kenya that he shrugs off any suggestion that he returns to Britain.
James Humber, his son, a sugarcane loader in Malava, takes care of his ailing father together with his wife Hellen Lusinya. "We cant afford his medical care, he sometimes goes out to beg," he said.

Do they have FIDA for men? Is there a lawyer in Kenya who can represent this guy for free. Where are the lawyers who have a heart. I have never heard a lawyer in Kenya representing a client free. Hii mama inaitwa Elizabeth know that pesa itaisha and will will get yourself in a worse situation than him. Every dog has its day. Barry Leonard Humber you can get free medical if you are still a British citizen and return to Britain. Pona haraka Barry.
Before we castigate his ex.

Before we castigate his ex. woman, It would be prudent to hear her side of the story first.Certainly this fellow is catching hell,no doubt. But how much of that is his own doing. For starters, he divorced his briton wife against his families wishes(Probably chasing ndogo ndogo). This tells me that she must have been agood woman.Of course I am aware that what counts is what the fellow felt about the women. But you cannot totally discount observations, and input of you community.
And before one negatively paints Kenyan women with one broad brush stroke, he/she should know that its takes a kenyan man,and akenyan woman to make one. For all I know this could just be one of the bad marriages around the world, for whatever reasons... Again to be fair, lets weigh both sides.Short of that the views are skewed, and must "acquit".
In any event, this Kenyan needs help. Put yourself in his position for one day.I am pretty sure that there is at least one good lawyer who can take this fellow's case on probono basis. But does he have evidence, and a legal leg to stand on-locus standi?
Again why Maxiley you remain

Again why Maxiley you remain a Gentleman in my books, you are not too hadte to Chastite women whenever a woman "Delilah " is mentioned. Every story has two sides and depending on how logical or illogical one deems to be, then sides are taken. So for those who are caught with their pants down , must they always condemn the skirt wearers? In this world we live in , it takes smarts to deals with our fellow men bevit in jobs, marriages, cohabitation, Chase banking lol, etc. It is a jungle and whrn is outsmarted, dont blame the player! I find it comical when folks fall in scams, etc because of their greed, opportusim and yet when they are dealt, they start whining. Every aspect of life is a risk and one has to admit sometimes one hits the jackpot and other times one loses. Whenever you enter in a deal personal or otherwise, consider whether you are a risk averse or otherwise

FG2, thanks for putting me in your book as a gentleman. Some have me in their blackbook, but that's fine. It's your book that matters:)
Anyway, I like being as fair as possible If I can.Probably it's because of being around lawyers all the time. I dont know,or being is the USA for long. However, you will agree with me that there is something inherently bias in patriarchal societies, when it comes to male / female matters. And that's not fair. Open mindedness, enlightenment, and common sense if used wisely would eliminate alot of these unfair"discrimination".For example a villager I know recently divorced four times because the wives were not getting pregnant. To him, men cannot be the problem. It has to be the women he marries...These is the kind of mentality Iam against...And yes it is still there.Next to corruption...They all need to be eradicated. And no I dont live among primitive people. They are just stubborn.

This guy should be treated like any other Kenyan guy, I know a lot of Kenyan men in similar predicaments and are not in the news... or is it because he is European. Lots of Kenyan who have been left to die in European cities and US but still not in the news.

Wacha zako @kunawenyeinchinawanainchi, anybody who come out asking for help wakenya wanasaidia. If they do not come out, nobody will know they need help. Kenyans will not push their help down your throat if you do not request it.
