NTSA Launches Instant Fines System for Traffic Violations

Motorists in Kenya who breach traffic regulations will now receive immediate notifications of offences via SMS under a new instant fines system launched by the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA).

The authority announced on Monday, 9 March, that offenders are required to pay fines within seven days. Late payments will incur additional penalties, and access to NTSA services will be restricted until the fines are settled.

The system operates through more than 1,000 smart cameras installed on major roads, which can detect 37 types of traffic offences in real time. These include speeding, improper lane use, driving on pedestrian walkways, and failure to wear seatbelts. Fines range from KSh500 to KSh10,000 depending on the severity of the violation.

The rollout follows a directive from President William Ruto, who recently criticised delays in implementing the programme. During a meeting at State House Nairobi with the National Council on the Administration of Justice, he urged the Ministry of Transport to accelerate the installation of cameras in key urban centres.

Transport Cabinet Secretary Davis Chirchir subsequently confirmed that the initiative would be completed within the planned timeframe under an investor-supported model. The NTSA stressed that adherence to traffic rules remains the most effective way to avoid fines and encouraged drivers to respond promptly to official notifications.

The authority also stated that further guidance would be provided through government communication channels as the system expands.
