Kenyan Diaspora Leader Shiundu Awarded Historic City of London Honour

Juvenal Shiundu, a prominent figure in the international maritime sector, was recently recognised with the Freedom of the City of London.

The honour reflects his significant contributions to global maritime safety and the Kenyan diaspora in the United Kingdom. Shiundu’s career began with a strong focus on education and service, with his family emphasising the importance of both.

He became Kenya’s first trained naval architect, earning a degree in Naval Architecture and Shipbuilding from Newcastle University, a member of the UK’s prestigious Russell Group. He later pursued advanced studies in Sweden, earning a master’s degree in Maritime Safety Administration from the World Maritime University.

These academic achievements helped establish his role in elevating Kenya’s maritime presence on the world stage. Shiundu’s professional trajectory culminated at the International Maritime Organization (IMO) in London, where he served for over two decades.

As Director of the Technical Cooperation Division, he led global initiatives aimed at improving maritime safety and building capacity in developing nations. Beyond his work at the IMO, he also chaired the Kenya National Shipping Line Limited and founded Maritime and Blue Economy Insights Limited, a consultancy promoting Kenya’s maritime potential internationally.

In addition to his maritime career, Shiundu has played a key role in strengthening the Kenyan community in the UK. As Chairman of the Kenya Society UK, he has worked to foster connections among Kenyans through mentorship programmes, cultural events, and professional networking. His efforts have helped the diaspora stay connected to their heritage while excelling in their careers abroad.

Shiundu was awarded the Freedom of the City of London in December 2019, a prestigious civic honour that places him among a distinguished group of global leaders.
