Four Arrested as KWS Seizes Two Tonnes of Zebra Meat in Kiambu

Authorities in Kenya have arrested four individuals in Kiambu County after seizing nearly two tonnes of zebra meat during a raid in Gikambura.

The operation, led by the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS), uncovered six sacks of de-boned meat, a fully skinned zebra carcass, and several frozen packages. The confiscated items were believed to have been intended for distribution at Dagoretti Market in Nairobi.

KWS is now investigating the origins of the meat and the broader network behind the illegal trade. The suspects remain in custody as inquiries continue. KWS emphasised that the possession, transport, or sale of wildlife products without authorisation is a serious offence under the Wildlife Conservation and Management Act.

The agency also warned that the growing scale of the illegal bushmeat trade poses significant risks, not only to Kenya's wildlife and conservation efforts but also to public health, through the potential spread of zoonotic diseases.

In response to the raid, KWS vowed to enhance surveillance and called on the public to report any suspicious activity.
