‘Good to Have a More Educated Deputy,’ Ruto Jokes About Kindiki
William Ruto used humour during a speech at State House this week, joking about the academic credentials of his deputy, Kithure Kindiki, as he confirmed progress on the long-delayed Nithi Bridge.
Speaking about the bridge project, President Ruto said the contractor had finally moved to the site to begin construction. He then quipped in Kiswahili that it can be beneficial to have an assistant who is more educated than oneself. The remark, directed at Prof Kindiki, prompted laughter from those present. Ruto added that he had deferred approval of the bridge’s design to his deputy, referring to him as “the professor”.
The President made similar remarks at a teachers’ forum at State House in September 2025. On that occasion, he said leaders should surround themselves with people who are more knowledgeable than they are. He added that while such colleagues may do much of the work, leaders often receive the credit. Prof Kindiki stood in acknowledgement of the comment.
In his address, Ruto also outlined several infrastructure projects. He said plans were in place to construct a dual carriageway from Makutano to Mau, with work expected to begin in early 2027. The road is intended to reduce congestion, improve regional connectivity and support economic activity.
He further set out a broader plan to link Rironi to Mau Summit and later extend the corridor to Malaba to strengthen transport links and cross-border trade. The government has also committed to increasing security during construction of the Sh200 billion Rironi–Mau Summit Road, which is due for completion by June next year.
