Observers, Media Practitioners Invited to Apply for IEBC Accreditation for February By-Elections

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has opened accreditation for election observers and media practitioners ahead of the by-elections scheduled for 26 February 2026.

In a public notice issued on 9 January, the Commission invited eligible organisations to submit applications through its online Accreditation Management System. IEBC stated that only digital submissions will be accepted and that manual or physical applications will not be considered.

The deadline for applications is 6 February at 5.00 pm. The Commission warned that incomplete or late submissions will be automatically rejected and advised applicants to ensure stable internet access when applying.

Successful applicants will receive training and official accreditation badges, allowing access to polling stations and tallying centres. IEBC clarified that it will not provide financial support, allowances, or facilitation to accredited observers or media representatives.

Enquiries related to the accreditation process are being handled through the Commission’s official communication channels, including a designated email address and telephone line. The by-elections will take place in several areas, including the Isiolo South parliamentary constituency, Muminji and Evurore wards in Embu County, and Kabras West ward in Kakamega County. All polls are scheduled to be conducted on the same day.

The announcement follows the appointment of returning officers and their deputies for the affected constituencies and wards. IEBC chairperson Erastus Ethekon has also gazetted key timelines for political parties and independent candidates.
Campaigns will begin on 22 January and end on 23 February, with activities permitted between 7.00 am and 6.00 pm.

Political parties and candidates are required to submit the names of constituency and polling station agents by 12 February. IEBC confirmed that the certified Register of Voters published in June 2022 will be used for the by-elections, maintaining continuity in voter records for the exercise.
