Raila Signals Interest in AU Chairmanship Role

Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga has expressed his willingness to run for the position of African Union Chairman.

During a media briefing in Karen, Nairobi on February 15, 2024, Raila revealed that he arrived at this conclusion after consulting with his close friends. According to Raila's statement, General Olusegun Obasanjo has hinted that the Azimio leader would be inclined to serve Africa if given the chance. Additionally, the Orange Democratic Movement leader has expressed his preparedness to lend a hand in advancing the welfare of the continent whenever the need arises.

“I am ready and offer myself to be of service to this African content when called upon,” he said.

Raila Odinga firmly holds the belief that Africa can achieve much better than its current status and should work towards larger accomplishments. His vast expertise, he notes, makes him the ideal candidate to drive this vision forward. Migori Senator Eddie Oketch mentions that Raila does not need the support of the Kenya Kwanza administration to ascend to the position. According to Oketch, Raila's widespread connections and prestigious standing make him a suitable contender for the position. Senator Oketch stresses that Raila holds more political and diplomatic status across the continent than President William Ruto.

“I have served in the AU in the capacity of high representative, it gave me a good advantage to be able to learn about every African country and the comparative advantages and I believe that by walking together with the countries we can make Africa great,” the former prime minister added.

Oketch believes the government is attempting to impede Raila's ability to represent the interests of his fellow Kenyans by nominating him for the AU role. Member nations must back a candidate for the top position at the AU. Sources indicate that the campaign for Raila will commence at the 44th Ordinary Session of the African Union's Executive Council in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Kenya's representation at the summit was earlier led by Prime Cabinet Secretary and CS for Foreign and Diaspora Affairs Musalia Mudavadi.

Additional reports suggest that Former President Uhuru Kenyatta had also expressed interest in the AU position but may have decided to withdraw his candidacy in favor of Raila. If Ruto throws his support behind Raila for the continent-wide role, Kenya will experience key political shifts, similar to what occurred during the infamous “handshake.” Such a move would effectively eliminate Raila from the 2027 presidential bid, creating ample room for new political coalitions.

Given the prized position of the AU, the chair must remain impartial during any political matchups, be it locally or internationally. This particular position inherently wields vast political influence, similar in effect to that of a head of state which means the duty entails being involved in major political undertakings including global democracy efforts, resolving disputes, and promoting development, not just in Africa but across borders.
