Former Kakamega governor Wycliffe Oparanya is currently being questioned by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) in Nairobi for suspected procurement irregularities.
EACC officials have accused him of embezzling funds from the county government of Kakamega between March 2013 and May 2023. On Wednesday, August 23, 2023, the EACC searched Oparanya's houses in Nairobi and Kakamega counties. The officers arrived at his Nairobi residence with a search warrant and searched all vehicles leaving the property.
When they left, they demanded that Oparanya be driven in their official vehicle but his lawyer argued that they did not have a warrant to permit the same. The officers arrived at Mr. Oparanya's residence at 9:53 a.m. and conducted a thorough search of his house for four hours. They sought out any written or digital proof that might be linked to the improper acquisition of property via proceeds of crime and irregular procurement processes during his tenure as Governor.
Initial findings indicate that funds were transferred to contractors' bank accounts and later withdrawn. Mr Oparanya is the former chairman of the Council of Governors, a deputy party leader of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), and a close ally of opposition leader Raila Odinga. He also chairs the executive committee of the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition.
“The said money is suspected to have been deposited by persons closely associated with the respondent into various bank and Sacco accounts belonging to the respondent...in an intricate scheme of concealing the money,” reads an EACC report in part.

Sooo, what is new? It's the Kenyan way of life: STEAL,STEAL as a matter of course.
Kaka-Mega thieves will get a ksh1 million bond, and enjoy the stolen billions quietly for the rest of their lives in this corruption stuck shìthole!!! Same forest same monkeys!
Oparanya is not the only thief of public coffer in Kenya. Line all of them up. It should be everything or nothing. Non should be spared. Some of these thieves are cabinet ministers today. What a shame to bring one sacrificial ramb? All of them thieves should be put in a room and the public invited in to stone them to death. That is the kind of mandamano that I would show up personally.
@ Mwororo, that punishment you suggested could end corruption tomorrow.
In my experience as an accountant,I have concluded that, you cannot safely hide illgotten money. Even if you laundery it,it's just amatter of time for that money trail to surface. The question usually is ,do you have the political will, and manpower to do it? Yes it can be done. It always starts with suspicion or whistle blowing.BTW,do they still audit potential Mpigs, snf other government officials who want lofty jobs?
@Maxiley, I feel you. They display the loot in public. Their children live large in western countries; U.S. Canada, Australia and in European nations. Here at home, children go to bed hungry, in my village we have what I call social tax. Every so often we've to raise money to help the sick, victims of an accident or cancer. Patients bring their own bandages and surgical needs to the hospital otherwise, no help- yet these thieves' children are driving BMWs and other high end vehicles abroad. They drink all day long. They have good lives- multiple chicks, courtesy of the poor mwananchi. Its sad because the money stolen is wasted in opulence and splendor. Multiple cars, multiple homes even helicopters amidst multiple problems and sufferings by the very people who pay taxes. Something is begging to be done to bring sanity anto the land and its people. And then if you come to the churches- behold the holy corruption. Our land is sick!
Haunt the big sharks then smaller fish will shy away from the habit. .Way to go!..
Definitely its a well coordinated rat scheme. Nowadays the arrows have shifted to the former and present opposition leaders even if there hide inside an underground caves. The witch hunting season for Mpigs has just started
