Equity CEO James Mwangi Donates Sh120 Million to Help Kenyans Facing Starvation

Equity Bank CEO James Mwangi has donated $1 million (Sh120 million) to help support families affected by the ongoing drought in the country.

Speaking on Saturday during a consultative meeting presided over by President Ruto to discuss the current drought situation, Mwangi urged the government to come up with a lasting solution to the menace.

“It appears it’s a perennial issue so why don’t we look for a permanent solution? On behalf of my family and the Equity group on matching grant through the Equity Foundation, I will give $1 million,” Mwangi said.

While calling on development partners to step in and help the government to alleviate the suffering of starving Kenyans, President Ruto said the drought has affected 5.1 million people and decimated 2.5 million livestock.

“We are in a very precarious situation. 20 counties have been affected... We are facing the fourth consecutive season of rain failure. We have a huge population of our country without food,” said Ruto.

“I request all over us to bend over backward and see what we can do. As the government, we have to plan ahead of time. We could have done better and I promise that going to the future, we will be better prepared to change this situation. It will cease being an emergency.”

On Friday, the Kenya Red Cross Society in partnership with the cereals millers association flagged off relief food to more than 60,000 learners across 150 schools in nine counties in order to keep them in school during the examination period.

How come close to 60 years after independence people are still dying of starvation yet all this statistics of Nairobi being one of the best cities to live in.All that money being collected through taxes instead of buying green fertilizer how about importing food specifically cheap flour since we cannot produce it cheaply ourselves.Big shame that there are NGO ‘s whose claim to fame is supplying relief food to Kenyans.

Our priorities are screwed up.I refuse to believe that we cannot eradicate hunger if we put it as a priority. Its all about good planning, vision, and will to carry the projects to completion.
Since independence, we have known the potential hot spots for hunger. What have we done to ward off hunger in these places?

Cabbage, potatoes, peas, carrot and other produce are rotting in the farms in Kinangop because there are no buyers. The government needs to go to Kinangop to buy the food for all these hungry Kenyans. It is a shame they will go begging our colonizers for food while the food is rotting in the farms.

Ruto must make sure the so-called 50 Mt.Kenya billionaires pay taxation.Shs 120m should not be alternative to evaded billions,NO.Why are the twenty counties still milking hungry billionaire Kenyans if they cannot feed their residents?Ten years of looting with ZERO development.

Do these famine situations happen in Tanzania and Uganda also? We are close neighbors but I don't hear anything about that coming from our neighbors.

Why does Mwangi donate to folks who do not appreciate anything?? Hunger is a good experience to teach those affected that bottom up politics does not put food on the table.

You are one overgrown idiot - how dare you wish hunger, starvation & death for your fellow citizens just to teach them a lesson. Be careful lest what you wish on others happen to you wherever you are

Nonsense! You have become beggars of the worst order and always expecting everything to be handed over to you for free. All the reason Kenyans have list the spirit of hard work because others will come for their rescue; you @malache included. Learn to fish for yourself!!
