MP Richard Onyonka Reportedly Poisoned at a Public Rally in Kisii

Kitutu Chache South MP Richard Onyonka was on Friday rushed to the hospital following a case of suspected poisoning.

His Dagoretti North counterpart Simba Arati says Onyonka was poisoned during a public rally at Ibacho in Kisii on Friday evening.

It is alleged that an unidentified man passed a bottle of water to Onyonka which is suspected to have been laced with a poisonous substance.

Immediately after sipping the water, the two-time MP spit it out after noticing its strange taste but he started bleeding from his mouth and was rushed to Oasis Hospital where he was treated and discharged to recuperate at home.

“He is out of danger and is recuperating at an undisclosed location,” Arati said on Saturday.

Doctors at the hospital said Onyonka, who is eyeing the Kisii senatorial seat in 2022, could have lost his life had he ingested the harmful substance in the bottled water.

Former Nyaribari Chache MP Robert Monda said they noticed blood oozing from Onyonka’s mouth as he addressed the rally but he later vomited when he sat down. He linked the incident to political rivalry, saying politics should not be a matter of life and death.

“If God meant to have Simba Arati as the next Kisii Governor and Onyonka as the next Kisii Senator nobody can change that,” Monda asserted.

Onyonka had allegedly expressed fears that some political opponents wanted to eliminate him over his political stand.
