How Fidel Odinga Spent His Last Day Before Dying in His Fathers Arms

Fidel Odinga, who died in his father’s arms on Sunday morning in his Karen home, had told friends on Friday that he was recovering from food poisoning after an outing in Naivasha the previous weekend.

Fidel turned down an offer of drinks from a friend last Friday, shortly after having lunch with eight friends in Nairobi, saying he was recovering from the food poisoning.

Two of his longtime friends, former Kenya Football Federation official Tom Alila and a lawyer who sought anonymity, said Fidel had told them about his mild illness.

Fidel died in his father Raila Odinga’s arms in his residence at Bel Air Country Homes, off Miotoni Road, Karen, only hours after coming back from a night out in Westlands.

He had been driven home by a Smart Fellows taxi driver in his Range Rover Autobiography, Registration Number KCA 026V, from Sankara Hotel, Westlands, at about 4am.

The door of his house was opened by a house help and Fidel walked into his bedroom and went to bed.

Shortly thereafter, his wife, Lwam Gatachaw Bekele, who was nursing their baby, was woken up by a commotion and found Fidel in distress. He is reported to have been gasping for breath in bed.

The wife called her parents-in-law, Raila and his wife Ida, who left their Kerarapon home and drove to residence.

A doctor was called to attend to the ailing Fidel, but he died before being transferred to hospital.

Detectives began reconstructing the last moments of the former Prime Ministers son.

Investigators led by the Director of Criminal Investigations Muhoro Ndegwa and County Criminal Investigations Officer Ireri Kamwende started by interrogating the people who were last with Fidel. They included a cousin identified only as Bill, a close confidant identified only as Gichuru and three friends who spent part of the night with Fidel in Westlands before he was driven home.

According to Kwamende, preliminary investigations have established that Fidel was at his fathers Kerarapon residence in Karen over lunchtime. He and Raila sat outside under a tree in front of the house and privately held a lengthy conversation.

Taita Taveta Senator Danson Mwazo Mwakulegwa and his wife were at the former PMs residence on Saturday afternoon and said that Fidel looked well and engaged his father in a very long conversation but did not take lunch, despite repeated appeals by his mother Ida.

"I was at the house at about lunchtime and we even joked about him not being in Bondo for Christmas because I spent three days there but didn’t see him. We laughed it off. He looked very okay and had a lengthy conversation with his father under the tree. They did not even respond to Idas repeated calls to have lunch. Then he left," the senator recalled.

Fidel left Karen for Westlands, where he joined his friends and cousin Bill. They went to Capital Club Imperial, then had lunch at Artcaffe at the Mall before going to The Oval.

It is while at The Oval that a Ugandan friend, Barnabas Tarema, called Fidel and his friends at about 6:35pm and invited them to the Sankara Hotel, where they relocated at 10pm until about 3am.

Fidel ordered Vodka.

Fidel also met former South Sudan leader John Garangs son Mabior Garang at the same hotel.

He left and was driven home by the taxi driver.

His cousin Bill, who was with his fiancee Lucy, told the police that they joined the Ugandan along with other friends.

The CID boss keenly took notes from some of the people who were with Fidel as they waited for the Government Pathologist, Dr Johansen Oduor, who was scheduled to conduct a preliminary investigation on the body, which remained in the bedroom until 5pm.

A family pathologist joined Dr Oduor in conducting the preliminary examination.

President Uhuru Kenyatta called the CID boss, who was at the scene, to find out what was going on and was briefed before he sent a message of condolences to the family.

Friends yesterday disclosed that Fidel had just bought his wife a Range Rover and another house into which they were planning to move.

What rubbish is this? Why, if there is an ongoing incomplete investigation do we need to know telescopic details of what the deceased did, lived, driven by, etc... simply pathetic. I would urge Raila Odinga to sue whoever is responsible for this leak. Plus, the breakdown is full of contradictions, i.e turned down lunch, had lunch with so and so, blah, blah. Jamani, heshima. The man may simply have died of good living, it does happen to mere mortals, so........

I am of course sympathetic to the tragedy, lakini this kind of journalism stirs something else by rubbing in how indulged these guys are. And to see Uhuru also promising to leave no stone unturned until the mystery is resolved just makes one feel sick. Where are such promises when our people are killed by al shabaab? Hakuna mtu and jitu, sote tu watu ndugu! All said, condolences to the family.

Turning down lunch, 'having better things to do' and all that are Raila's own words, he eulogized today. You should watch the news before ranting. But I do agree that that this story is bizarre. I missed the part where he died in his arms though.

Due to prolonged bad (political) blood between Kyuks and Luos since the days of Tom Mboya, this guy Gichuru should answer much questions as possible as to what really happened to Fidel. FIMBO YA MBALI HAIWIWI NYOKA. And I am not kidding.

RIP Fidel. I wish the wife sort medical help for the husband before calling her in-laws to come and check on him. His Father should have also called for medical emergency services to rush to his son's residence as soon as his daughter in law informed them of the medical emergency at hand.....maybe, just maybe his life would have been saved. May God rest his soul in peace

First and foremost no clean bill of health is for sure ...no one knows his health history, second why leave a young wife and child to party like your seventeen, third he wasn't fit to drive himself home, fourth in an emergency why call the parents and not the doctor, fifth why do maids open doors for drunken bosses,, there should be a law against such 3:a.m working conditions and still on the clock? Investigations is always Kenyans pledge nsk nsk

@ ujinga wingi.. I concur totally. Especially the part that says that the boy could not drive himself home. I am not a detective, but even a fool investigating this incident should begin from this simple premise. He was blacked out with whatever kind of d

So METHANOL drinking has now gone four classes high to FIVE class hotels?Raila thought that he was only selling KILLER METHANOL to the Mt.Kenya youth, now a METHANOL grave is being dug in Bondo. And we must also remember that devil worshippers can sacrifice anything to their gods.

Ok first sorry for the loss.
But people please take a step back and think. He was a promising guy and all kenyan are now drawn into it and need to know what happen. So questions are going to be asked.
Did anyone watch news last night Raila giving a speech at his home? Really who lough and make such jokes while he just lost his own son? please look for the news and watch it yourself.

second...at the speech Raila said that " I got a call that my son is no more". then how did he died on his father's arms??

again sorry for the loss

Families don't reveal what they're family members are suffering from. The guy was definitely living on the fast lane. He was probably addicted to something. We know he got arrested for doing drugs in Stato.

Now these are just the consequences. We should stop speculating and accept the reality of living a risky lifestyle.

The guys kidneys were probably shut down and he needed dialysis because of the drinking problem, but they waited too long to get him to the dialysis machine.

So the window of opportunity is gone and the family members should be held responsible for negligence based on the events before and after he died in Raila's arm's.

Why do we get two contradicting stories...The initial one, day after Fidel paased on, it was reported that when he got home, he went to sleep in another bedroom because the wife was sleeping with their unwell son and did not want to disturb them. It continued to state that the wife found him dead in the said bedroom in the morning when she went around to look for him (Not knowing he had gotten home). Now, we get another story that he was in the same room with her and when she realized that he was in distress she called the father in-law. The a Doctor was called but was unable to stabilize his condition and that Fidel actually died before getting to hospital........?????? Which story should we believe??

Hapa kuna stori hatuambiwi, one minute he was found not breathing, now he was in distress alafu ati he died in his father's arms which is which?? My fellow kenyans alcohol is poisonous, drink responsibly. Rest in peace sir & to the family poleni kwa msiba

@Soda baridi, your analysis made me almost crack my ribs in laughter (a little innapropriate under the circumstances, one might say!). I think you have been overdoing in with soda baridi. Ati, he must have needed a dialysis machine and it took long to place him on one. Kwani it's how? Kuhukumiwa bila judge....anyway, siku njema. Wacheni marehemu rest in peace now.
