Trump Spares Kenya as US Tariffs Hit 70 Nations Starting August 7

The Trump administration is set to implement significant tariff increases on numerous countries, effective August 7, as part of a sweeping overhaul of US trade policy.

An executive order, signed by President Donald Trump on July 31, introduces new duties ranging from 10 to 41 percent on imports from a host of nations. The revised framework targets major economies, including Brazil, India, Japan, Israel, the United Kingdom and Switzerland, all of which face tariff increases potentially reaching 41 percent.

The administration argues that these measures are justified by persistent trade imbalances and insufficient concessions offered during trade negotiations. Several African nations also face increased tariffs. South Africa and Algeria will be subject to a 30 percent levy, while Nigeria, Ghana, Côte d'Ivoire, and Uganda will encounter a 15 percent increase. Goods originating from countries not specifically listed, including Kenya, will now be subject to a default 10 percent import tax.

The executive order states that its implementation will be consistent with applicable law and subject to the availability of appropriations, suggesting that further action may be taken if trading partners do not align with US economic and security priorities. The administration believes the tariffs are vital to restoring fairness and strengthening domestic manufacturing.

Analysts warn that these measures could strain diplomatic relationships and disrupt global supply chains, especially impacting developing economies that depend on US markets. Goods already en route to the US before August 7 will be exempt from the new tariffs.
