Detectives Probing Brutal Murder of a Teenage Couple in Umoja, Nairobi

Detectives in Nairobi are probing the gruesome murder of a teenage couple in Umoja area.

18-year-old Eric Maina Njeri and his girlfriend Leila Truphena were discovered dead in their two-bedroom apartment at Zone Eight estate within Umoja on November 8th.

They were found with stab wounds in different parts of their bodies, with their hands tied at the back.

It remains unclear who and why the two teenagers were brutally murdered but police have zeroed in on two possible theories—robbery and business rivalry.

Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) established that Maina and Leila arrived home at around 9:00 pm on November 6th in the company of two men.

Their decomposing bodies were found in the apartment after going for days without being seen.
 
Police said a search for the two by Maina’s grandfather started after their mobile phones went unanswered for days.

“The 18-year-old’s guardian from Seychelles who’s been paying their rent and occasionally stayed with them at House no. 11 plot 1450 of the Umoja Zone 8 houses had also attempted calls that were not answered. This triggered the grandfather to show up at his kin’s door, only to be met by a foul smell emanating from the inside of a locked door. The door had been locked from outside using a padlock,” reads a police report.

The grandfather alerted officers from Buruburu police station who arrived immediately and gained entry into the house, where they found the lifeless bodies of Maina and his girlfriend.

“Signs of vehement struggle at the living room and a bloody floor across a corridor leading to the restroom and the bedroom left responders mouth agape,” DCI said.
