MP Rigathi Gachagua Seeks Release of His Passport to Allow Him Travel Abroad

Mathira MP Rigathi Gachagua is seeking the release of his passport to allow him to travel abroad.

In an application filed at the anti-corruption court, the MP says he wants to travel to Dubai for parliamentary duties.

Through his lawyer Gibson Kimani, Gachagua told Milimani Senior Principal Magistrate Rose Makungu that he is set to travel to Dubai with a parliamentary committee.

The first-time MP was ordered to deposit his passport in court last month as a condition for his release on bail in a case where he is charged with unlawfully receiving Sh7 billion. The court is scheduled to issue a ruling on the application on Monday.

Gachagua was charged with conspiracy to commit an offense of corruption, fraudulent acquisition of public property, money laundering, acquisition of proceeds of crime, and conflict of interest.

His co-accused include William Wahome Mwangi, Anne Nduta Ruo, Julianne Jahenda Makaa, Samuel Murimi, Grace Wambui Kariuki, Lawrence Kimaru, Irene Wambui Ndigiriri, David Reuben, and a company M/s Rapid Medical Supplies.

The charge sheet stated that on diverse dates between 2013 and 2020 in Nairobi, Gachagua fraudulently received Sh7,330,011,265 through three bank accounts at Rafiki Micro-Finance bank while knowing that the monies were proceeds of crime.

He pleaded not guilty to the and was released on Sh12 million cash bail with an alternative of Sh25 million bond.

Please do not give this thief his passport! He is a flight risk and he wants to escape jail time with the stolen shillings 12 billion!
