Shock as Kigumo Teachers Training College Deputy Principal Commits Suicide in the Hospital

Workers and students at Kagumo Teachers Training College in Nyeri are in shock after the institution’s deputy principal committed suicide.

Cyrus Ndirangu reportedly took his own life by hanging himself at Mathari Consolata Hospital’s clothesline on Wednesday night.

Confirming the incident, Nyeri police commander Paul Kuria said the deceased had been rushed to the health facility on Wednesday evening after ingesting an unknown poison in his house located within the college.

“The teacher was rushed by his colleagues after ingesting an unknown poison. However, he sneaked out at night while undergoing treatment and committed suicide by hanging himself on the clothesline,” Kuria said.

Kuria said detectives are investigating the incident to establish what pushed the tutor into killing himself.

“We have already sent sleuths at the facility to investigate how he died. We are awaiting reports from our officers,” he added.

Kenya kenya. How does someone ingest poison then you let them loose… out of your sight! I say this from experience. Kenyans including medics are clueless about depression. Someone makes a statement about killing themselves and nobody does something about it until it’s too late. This man needed 1:1 attention, psychiatric review. But then again kenya sio ya mama yangu.

This is a lawsuit in the US. The guy should have been on suicide watch. Lakini Kenya we know very little on how to deal with depression and suicidal people

Please have the sent sleuths also investigate how a suicide attempt person is left alone to allow him to "sneak" to complete the suicide. Thy brought him in for a reason - save his life from poison and safety to prevent another attempt. There is negligence. If they could not have a sitter, they can allow a family member to monitor the human being who may have been depressed or going down a sloppy slope.

just FYI:
Most people in Kenya (and 3rd Wirld countries) unfortunately think Bipolar depression (for example) is Madness; or Witchcraft. Which is not necessarly True. You would here something like, "Oooh! So and do is a Madman; so and so has been Bewitched." And it's because most don't know Bipolar depression is a Triggered or Genetic mental Illness.

I have a bipora child of 30 years now and life i know how it works when something even minor is an issue he is depressed . he does not take the phone he does not call. This is very mind taxing for us parents but he can rise very quickly if the problem is solved . what one needs is a physiologists if not a shrink but there has to be a will . Outs has told us since how he is vaccinated he will seek help . problem we do not detect soon enough of the problem we get angry about the behaviour and make it worse by complaining to a sick person . it is very tough but this teacher could have been helped but the other teachers solution was a hospital with right but the hospital did not keep watch that is how bad our health care is I wish the family of this teacher comfort and peace in the days ahead . shalom

We are usually reactive than proactive. Detectives are investigating what pushed the tutor into killing himself then what?

I am glad his colleagues tried to prevent his suicide by taking him to the hospital. However, by the end of the day, these colleagues will not be there to support him after he is discharged from the hospital. I believe when people contemplate suicide, they have reached to their end.

Anger, poverty, anxiety, depression and to some social isolation, and helplessness especially during this trying time of Covid is affecting our mental health and since in developing countries like kenya the system does not recognize the problem we have experienced suicides, murders by victims or abuse. what will it take to have a health care system which can take action have a program to identify the problem at least to those who seek help or a department where relatives/friends can report to

Zippy Nyariki,i need your professional help in this.Kenya needs to wake up on this issue of mental illiness. It is coming down very fast and it has no respect for persons from the haves to half not.We need sensitization on mental issues and the approach to this serious matter need to be reviewed. We need a sustained federal help to equip clinics with professional personnel to react to what people are going through. We also need deliberate efforts by all parties to do all they can not to dehumanise mental health so that people can be free to seek help instead of playing hide and seek game.

@ Mary. So what happened to Jeffrey Epstein? Was he in Nyeri when he allegedly hanged himself? Just wondering. I not dismissing the neglect by the hospital staff but do they have a psychiatric ward to deal with such issues as depression in Nyeri?
